Runcorn and Helsby by election

As far as I know there has not been a statutory inquiry with the power to enforce attendance and take sworn evidence.

Starmer's refusal to hold a national enquiery into 'Grooming Gangs' - that is Pakistani rape gangs - will blacken his memory forever. He is well past any possible 'refection'.

Kier Starmer was the guy who put Nazir Afzhal into place - Nazir Afzhal was the guy who forced the authorities to take grooming gangs seriously. Nobody ever remembers that.

They had 15 years to do it...

Not their priority I guess.

UNOFFICIALLY, Reform is leading after a full count by 4 votes over Labour. However, a full recount has been ordered, so a final result will be greatly delayed.

After the recount - it's 6 votes and the result is done.

By elections often have unpredictable results and I'm surprised that after all the extra free publicity that Reform have had (proportionate to their vote base) they only won by 6 extra votes.

Good. Starmer's awful government. the worst for at least a hundred years, has lost the first by election of this parliament. I hope the first of many. Reform overturned a 15,000 Labour majority, a stunning achievement.

Lol, someone forgot the last 15 years of Tory rule that put the UK in the position it is in now...

Runcorn voters have just elected a tory.
I think on balance its ok. I would hope that this is the jolt that labour needs. People wanted socialism not austerity.
Is starmer capable of change ?

Lol. Truss's government was so bad her own party sacked her after 45 days. She was also the most unpopular PM in history with an approval rating at one point of just 9%.

Massive result for reform maybe they are have taken the tories place. I’ve been convinced the conservatives and labour are actually dead for a little while now. It just not clear who labours replacement will be.

Problem is, the former government left the countrys financials in such a state, that there is no other way..at least in the short term.

Also, traditionally, the sitting government loses seats in local government..

And lets not forget...local UK councils have very little influence or power, as the UK is very centralised when talking governance.

I think the Winter fuel payments had a massive impact, I get the logic but was politically brain dead.

I get that. but they are a year in and they had choices. They have made a lot of bad ones. The disability cuts will be the next one.
The party seems detached from its roots. They all seem to come direct from Uni via a think tank.
How can farage claim to represent the working class ? Labour have vacated that space. Free suits and concert tickets is trashy tory behavior.

I voted lib in yesterdays election as the best bet to keep out the tory. But they dont impress me either.

The disability cuts, support for Israeli genocide and refusal to contemplate Europe are all awful decisions. Dumping the trannys was awful.

Farage can't claim shit other than he is a fascist. The disability cuts would look like nothing to what Reform would do to the average man and woman...depending on their skin colour of course.

I agree they made "bad" choices, but again what alternatives are there they could have gone down..there is no wiggle room in the budget and the economy is in the shitter due to Brexit and Tory mismanagement.

I understand the frustration of Brits and that is where Starmer and co failed..they failed to give the truth about the former government and it's economic mismanagement. Without that, their cuts and changes look wrong and counter productive...but I frankly can't see many alternatives that are not way worse.

Now saying that, my first cut would have been Trident and nuclear deterrent..if it was not for Trump. The UK simply don't have enough control or can afford such an expensive system to justify it. I also don't think the UK can avoid austerity, at least while the whole system is reworked to be more effective.

Wealth taxes on oil and banks and hedge funds. Reopen talks with Europe to rejoin. For a start.

While I don't disagree on the principle, in a modern world those companies can just move out of the UK to avoid it. BP could easily move to say Singapore with the click of a button and that won't help on tax receipts from that company.

Also that could in theory mean lower dividends, which a lot of ordinary pensioners live off.

Regardless of getting more tax income you need to cut spending and making things far more effective. Problem is lack of workers in many industries and that brings us to...

Rejoining Europe would do a lot of good, but it would also mean rehashing Brexit all over again and well.. I doubt a 180 on allowing EU workers back in would be popular, especially with Reform and the Tories banging the white nationalist theme at every turn.

It is not simple for Labour considering the constraints of the "British way" and economic reality...

Reading the most popular comments on the BBC page - it's all about "stopping the boats," "high immigration" and the "winter fuel allowance."

Illegal immigration and high migration were what drove Brexit's success and the two main parties are still drawing a blank on policy there. Illegal immigration is actually a small number but gets blown up by the media to be bigger than we see, legal migration was something Brexit was supposed to stop and the winter fuel allowance was shooting itself in the foot by Labour as the Reformists have successfully painted that as "taking money from doddery old pensioners and giving it to illegal migrants."

As mentioned - Brexit led to the very high numbers of legal migration, illegal boat migration is something smaller than pictured and the winter fuel allowance actually didn't hit those who needed to access it.

It's all about who has the power to make the best sound bites in messaging and Reform have the backing of big media and clever catchphrases that the main parties cannot overcome.

Go on Labour! Move to the left and lose what little support you have left. The UK is not craving yet more Socialist nostrums.
