Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

It looks like Zimmerman didn't have his gun because of NW, he had it because of an ND, that is, neighborhood dog. So for everyone that stated he got his gun because he was a weenie, AHEM SHARON, you want to go head to head with a pit bull after a cop tells you to get a gun?

I think we saw this elsewhere. But I really don't know that it makes a difference.

Yes, it does. Zimmerman, a private citizen lawfully carrying a concealed weapon for his safety and protection and had jack**** to do with neighborhood watch.

I can't get your link to open.. Were all the neighbors carrying guns because of this dog?

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

The couple took firearms training courses and got handguns and concealed carry permits in late 2009 -- three years before Zimmerman shot unarmed teen Trayvon Martin dead -- after a pit bull named Big Boi menaced Shellie Zimmerman near their home, Reuters reported.

"Don't use pepper spray ... Get a gun."

- Seminole County Animal Services officer

Big Boi later spooked a dog owned by Zimmerman's mother-in-law, prompting the Zimmermans to contact Seminole County Animal Services and to buy pepper spray, the news agency reported. After a third encounter with the dog, Zimmerman called authorities and an officer who came to the house advised him to take up arms.

"Don't use pepper spray," the officer told the Zimmermans, according to a friend who relayed the conversation to a Reuters reporter. "It'll take two or three seconds to take effect, but a quarter-second for the dog to jump you. Get a gun."

Why not call animal control or go to a magistrate? If the dog was dangerous and children played outdoors.????

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

Why is the reason he had a gun relevant?

Why is the reason he had a gun relevant?

Only from the standpoint that it shows a reason un-related to being a copper wanna' be, as he's been portrayed. (Character, I'd think.)

There are far more effective and humane ways to deal with a dog...especially a pit bull. Just my $0.02.

The most effective being bashing the owner over the head with a hammer. These dogs have been just ruined by the reputation rightly earned by irresponsible owners.

Very true. The breed use to be America's Dog. Now it just has a bad rap.

We have an extreme overbreeding issue where I am...a ton of brindles, wanted for their tiger stripe look.

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

FOOD would have worked better.

Even "fighting" pits are totally food motivated.

And anybody who encounters a loose pitbull and feels threatened and isn't armed, try the "come here boy!" bit. Act like you know them.

I try to "rescue" every loose pit I see, because the dogs have such a bad rap, and that's how I have got several home.

One guy turned white as a sheet when I brought the dog home because all his friends were terrified of the dog.

No guarantee it'll work, but its DEFINITELY worth a shot.

And treats for a neighborhood dog. Food is god to a pit.

Not that I'm doubting your experience, but I think i'd be much more likely to take the word of the animal services officer.

The story makes little sense to me.. The neighborhood is full of kids.

Personally? I doubt the animal control officer said that to him in any professional context at all...maybe off the cuff, but not as a viable solution. Telling people to shoot an animal in a subdivision is just plain fool-hearty. Best advice? Figure out whose dog it is and report them for having an animal at large. Over and over and over again. $100-$300-$500 and more. Dog gets new home with less stupid owner. Or, worst case, dog gets put down for no other reason than his master is an asshole.

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

Anyone else notice a level of hypocrisy in this thread that is pretty high? Let me explain.

How many times, in the other two threads, did we hear "He went against the instructions of the cops and followed Zimmerman?" Well, this time, he FOLLOWED the instructions of the cops and he is STILL being ridiculed.

I'm beginning to wonder what this man could do that would honestly and truly make some people happy.

Maggie, nobody told him to "shoot the dog." He was instructed to carry a gun. I took a concealed carry course. I was instructed to carry a gun, I was never told to shoot anyone. Big difference.

I don't believe the story either....

Oh good God in heaven.....

You sure have no problems believing anything that comes out, even speculation, that would be bad for Zimmerman. That post right there proves you have no interest in fairness.

Thanks for playing.

Come on. If the animal control officer told him to carry a gun in conjunction with his problem with pit bulls (which I doubt), he meant "be prepared to shoot the dog."

It makes no difference to me that this story's come out. It's trying to show that Zimmerman got a gun because of pit bulls in the neighborhood. I don't care why he got his gun. He got it -- and carried it -- legally. What real difference does his motivation in getting one have to do with what happened?

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

Why is the reason he had a gun relevant?

It plays to character and intent. If Pants got a firearm for the expressed purpose of killing a black kid, and this intent could be proven, then Pants was not in legal possession of his firearm at the time and is automatically guilty.

I'm really not intersted in arguing it, but if the story is false, Zimmerman sure had been laying his plans to kill Martin for a long time - even having the forsight to tell his friend what the animal control officer had told him.

Re: George Zimmerman had gun to fend off pit bull

(can't get link to open from my phone, so if the answer is in the link disregard question)

How do you know they didn't? In my area, animal control won't do squat unless the animal is a stray or until it actually attacks someone or another animal.

The point of the story is that Zimmerman had a legitmate reason for wanting to carry a weapon. He was not a deranged, bloodthirsty vigilante looking for an opportunity to kill someone, as he has been unjustly portrayed.

First off, Im not sure why animal control didn't deal with the dog in question. Its illegal everywhere for your dog to run around loose. Pits are often in a special class too, subject to restrictions/penalties other dogs aren't.

My "advice" was for random pits encountered on the street and it DOES work, surprisingly often.

Even a gun may not stop a charging/attacking pit. They don't feel pain like other dogs and have phenomenal constitutions.

Ymmv, use at your own risk, etc.

There are better ways to deal with menacing dogs and their idiot owners than firing gun in a subdivision full of kids that play outdoors. Its a stupid story and a lie..

Plus, shooting a firearm within city limits often means a hefty fine.

NOT IN SELF DEFENSE!!!!

You truly are clueless to a level never experienced before on this forum.

How can you say it's a lie?? Because it actually shows Zimmerman as a normal person concerned with his safety? Did you even read the damn link? HIS WIFE GOT A CCW LICENCE TOO!!!

Oscar said it. "The point of the story..." The story is made up to excuse Zimmerman's having a gun, like the story that he's in hiding, afraid for his life. The stories feed into his defence that he's somehow a victim in the killing.
