Rote Armee Fraktion

There was a really good article in the Guardian about RAF (far left West German terrorist group), so I thought I'd share it.

Very good article. I liked it. Just perused it. Will read it more thoroughly later. 70s terror acts sparked intense media coverage, amplifications, books, movies that elevated the activists to a level of invincibility that was in actuality worlds away from their more complicated, chaotic, difficult daily, personal lives.

The Venezuelan Ilich Ramirez Sanchez aka Carlos the Jackal was another case in point. It suited everyone: journalists, readers, writers, movie makers, even intelligence agencies to promote this image of this invincible, efficient machine who could pull off his hijackings in front of the world. Those who arrested him decades later were far from impressed by the actual Carlos

Thanks for the link.

I wonder if the article will be read by any of the the RAF groupies who infect DP?

I used to go out with a fraulein who claimed her aunt was a member of the Baader-Meinhof gang.

Did you sleep with an eye open?

Great read. Delusional, romantic, ideologically and worldly naive. Their shortcomings are still shared by so many “educated useful idiots” today and will probably continue on into the future.
You are right- Although you left out the bit about Barda/Meinhof and their gang being murderous. They killed people, as would some of their present day admirers.

I felt that was understood as part of my response. Next time I’ll be more explicit.

I can't wait. I like gory tales. I first ran into mention of the Baader-Meinhoff gang in the wake of the 1976 hijacking of Air France Flight 139 from Greece to Entebbe Uganda. Hijackers Wilfried Base and Brigitte Kuhlmann were connected by the media to the Baader-Meinhoff gang. Maybe more because the Baader-Meinhoff gang had more notoriety and name recognition than their actual affiliation to their group RZ Revolutionäre Zellen Revolutionary Cells

You still haven’t managed to say who these supposed admirers are

they were really evil murderers

In the hindsight it is so amazing how they were glorified in the 70s. They got wide coverage. Books were written. Movies were made. They were held in some kind of awe. The Venezuelan Ilich Ramirez Sanchez aka Carlos the Jackal was at the top. These days terrorists are not glorified so much

The news media and the entertainment world’s thrives on feeding people’s fears to make buck, euro or whatever.

and there was the Lufthansa jet that was taken to Somalia

and freed by German anti.terror police GSG 9
