Robotic arms, the only way to fix oil leak

Now that we finally get the real picture of what can and can't be done at the gulf, a mile down, we can now make realistic suggestions on how to fix the oil leak.

If they had to use a powerful giant shear to cut the steel riser (visualize a pair of scissors), as we can clearly see, why don't they cover the sharp edges of the shear and crimp (squeeze) the riser shut? If done properly, and the steel doesn't crack, it will result in a complete seal.
