Republicans Think It's Your Fault That You are Poor

When you join the military then come talk to me ok? Being on call 24 hours making less than 30k a year then tell me what service isn't being provided.

Military service members get a lot of benefits considering that many times it involves employing 18 year olds with no skills. Furthermore a while ago , when the War In Iraq was going on, the military had to issue a slew of waivers because so many applicants had histories of being involved in gangs or drugs and otherwise had criminal records.

More aggravating than anything is the sense of entitlement. I had to stop volunteering at the VA hospital because I couldn't take it anymore. Entitled to this, entitled to that, looking down on the volunteers who were working to make their lives just a little bit better.

Yeah your story is now in doubt.

I did all three of those things. Whoopidy freaking do. Some would consider my neighborhood the ghetto.

The key to getting out of the ghetto is buying a house outside of the ghetto or renting a house outside of the ghetto. Shiny pieces of paper with a college stamp don't mean squat anymore. Stop living in 1950.

Hey sport, the degree got me a couple of great jobs which got me two nice houses and a lot of other things. So don't knock it.

It cracks me up when conservatives suggest bumming off of the government in order to avoid bumming off of the government.

B.S. I did two tours in Vietnam. I EARNED IT.

So come out of your mole-hole and wise up.

Can you explain to me what, since you agree, you base this opinion on?

Tell all the lazy people to go find a job/improve their skills and get off the food stamps etc. We have zero natural resources but we are richest country in the world with a high standard of living.

Government hurts their incentive, it's not entirely their fault. I mean, look at our min wage.

Employment and poverty
Singapore has the world's highest percentage of millionaires, with one out of every six households having at least one million US dollars in disposable wealth. This excludes property, businesses, and luxury goods, which if included would further increase the number of millionaires, especially as property in Singapore is among the world's most expensive.[96] Despite its relative economic success, Singapore does not have a minimum wage, believing that it would lower its competitiveness. It also has one of the highest income inequality levels among developed countries, coming in just behind Hong Kong and in front of the United States.[97][98]

Wow right? And no minimum wage?

Acute poverty is rare in Singapore; the government has rejected the idea of a generous welfare system, stating that each generation must earn and save enough for its entire life cycle. There are, however, numerous means-tested 'assistance schemes' provided by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports in Singapore for the needy, including some that pay out SGD 400 to SGD 1000 per month to each needy household, free medical care at government hospitals, money for children's school fees, rental of studio apartments for SGD 80 a month, training grants for courses, etc.[99][100][101]
rejected the idea of generous welfare system...as a culture...wow.

LOL, we don't even have a minimum wage policy.

Just curious, but what's a typical low skill job pay in Singapore?
Low skill job all done by foreigners whom we specially import to carry out these jobs. Locals improved their skills/education and moved up the ladder. These foreigners from third world countries earn little but good enough to remit some money back to their families in their home countries.

Exactly the sort of thing that we should be doing here. Including the min wage and welfare. Kinda come as an entire package, from what I can see.

Hmm, we sorta do the same thing in the US.

So are there no low skilled native Singaporians?

When you fix a minimum wage people always want more and get demoralised. We leave it to market forces.

And I'd agree with doing exactly that. Let the market sort it out. Far better results than letting the government screw it up (which they always do).

They likely work very low paying jobs and thus stay productive, and also receive government support.

Notice this ends up having the same effect, although likely significantly more efficient and less susceptible to corruption, as government trying ham-handedly to create a "work program" for low income people. There is absolutely no need, it's a huge stupid idea. Markets do it better, you let them pay anything, the markets put everyone that wants to, to work, and you subsidize it on top.

Imagine hiring someone for $2/hr. You'd hav someone polishing that commercial gym equipment, tipping them and baking them cookies when they do show up, and feeling as though your welfare support to them via taxes aint such a bad thing. Everyone wins. ;)

And what you get is one of the most unequal countries in the world: Singapore and the Welfare State | National Review Online!

I find it odd that conservatives in the US hate the idea of imigrants "taking our jobs" and outsourcing jobs to other countries, yet they seem to think that it is a good thing for other countries to engage in that behavior.

Bare minimum. There are hardly any locals for low skilled jobs. One in three here are foreigners including many professionals. We import both low skills and talent.

So new high school graduates have significant job skills?

Who runs your cashregisters, who stocks your store shelves? Are those people foreigners or locals?

I'm thinking I should visit Singapore to learn more about it.

So are you suggesting that we should subisize low wage paying businesses by providing welfare to the working poor? Don't we already do that?

Ya, if I could hire GOOD workers for $2/hr, I would probably do that. I would probably also fire my workers who are making more than that, and just let the government keep them up.
