I'd be interested in seeing the partisan breakdown of these polls, specifically Rasmussen. My guess is the Independent voters who blame the GOP for the shutdown must be very high.

I wish you would stop listening to Fox News, because illegals do NOT get federally funded health care. Some states DO extend health care funding to illegals.

Democrats have been pushing for concessions from the government on health - an extension to subsidies for Obamacare health insurance and changes to Medicaid.
But illegal or undocumented immigrants are not eligible for these schemes and the Democrats have not said they want to change this.

I don't understand it - but the news can't be trusted, so I could be missing something.

It seems obvious that the Democrats are shutting down the government. Which means that they should be out front and center saying why they are shutting it down and what they're asking for. These asks - Obamacare subsidies and Medicaid - are primarily, and could be exclusively, about keeping people alive. They could say flat out that they're excluding the illegals if they wanted. They should be saying "look, we're doing the shut down, but for something really important".

Instead, all the news is about how the Democrats are trying to blame the Republicans for the shutdown, which is just absurd given that it's on the news. The Republicans are eating it up because they want to transition to a country ruled by decree where Congress has no part in making spending decisions of any kind. And the Democrats don't even comment on that.

Maybe the news is just leaving out every part of the story? Or are the Democrats just that clueless?

They should. The GOP is in full control of government. It’s the republicans following Trump’s orders that refuses to negotiate or to play that old political game of give and take. If one goes to the polls themselves one does see the republicans getting most of the blame, but roughly a third of all Americans are blaming both major parties.

Even so, the question is will this shut down have any long-term effects? Will it cause Trump’s overall approval rating to drop? What about the midterms? If history is any guide, any event that happens a year out before an election has little to no effect on the next election. By that time this shut down will be ancient history. Long forgotten as other events takes it place.
