Support for the Republican Party has declined under President Donald Trump, a new poll of voter's congressional voting intentions has found. Negative polls are early indicators of changing public opinion about Trump and his policies. A sustained backlash to his early actions as president—which included implementing tariffs and imposing a range of executive orders—could persuade him to change course or risk losing support from the electorate. Sustaining public support is also important to Republicans in Congress, who hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. A loss of seven seats in the 2026 midterm elections could cost them control of the lower chamber. An April 16 poll of 1,000 registered voters conducted by RMG Research, a public opinion research firm founded by conservative pollster Scott Rasmussen, for Napolitan News Service found that if an election for Congress were held today, 48 percent would vote for the Democrat on their ballot, while 44 percent would vote for the Republican. This marks a seven-point swing since February, according to the pollsters. Before Trump was inaugurated on January 20, Republicans had a seven-point lead of 51 percent to the Democrats' 44 percent.

The poll follows an April Napolitan News Service survey that suggested 42 percent of respondents trusted Democrats more than Republicans on inflation, while 38 percent trusted Republicans more than Democrats on the same issue. An April 13 poll found that for the first time since May 2021, the GOP was seen as less trustworthy than Democrats with the nation's finances. According to a CNBC poll of 1,000 Americans, 43 percent approved of Trump's handling of the economy, while 55 percent disapproved—marking the first time a CNBC survey showed the president with a net negative on the economy. William F. Hall, an adjunct professor of political science and business at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, previously told Newsweek: "It is my opinion, increasingly, in view of the extremely negative ratings experienced by a Republican led Administration, it does appear that, barring some highly unlikely unforeseen circumstances, the midterm elections will bring about a major shift in the makeup of the House of Representatives, with an overwhelming victory for Democratic House candidates.

In the 2018 midterms, Democrats gained a net total of 41 seats from the total number of seats they had won in the 2016 elections.

Early polling strongly suggests that a similar blue-wave for House seats will be repeated in 2026.

I hope that he destroys that awful party. It should be razed and plowed under with salt. Once the ground is properly leveled, they should build something useful there like a Dairy Queen or a crematorium.

Trumpers seem to counting on immigration to play a large role in the midterms favoring the GOP. However, in spite of Trump and Fox trying to keep the focus on migrants and a supposed activist judiciary, new polling is showing a drop in approval on all areas including immigration.

"A significant majority of respondents (83 per cent) believe the president should adhere to federal court rulings"

"The poll also highlights that criticism of Trump's performance surpasses approval across key issues, including immigration, inflation, taxation, and adherence to the rule of law. Notably, even on immigration — traditionally one of his stronger areas — 46 per cent disapprove of his handling."

It's dead as far as I'm concerned, he started destroying it for good in his first go 'round, their spines turned to jello and they showed their true colors during his first two impeachments. Now their colors are orange cheeks and brown noses.

When he incited his failed coup and cowardly spread his Big Lie, they sat on their hands and remained silent or started kneeling and making excuses for him, they lost any hint of worth that they may still have had as patriotic Americans. :poop:

There is rarely much change in the US Senate. It is a petrified/oligarchal institution.

Thus, the House is key to erecting guardrails against Donald Trump.

There should be zero reason that Americans trust the Republican party on finances. Reality has shown the complete opposite for the last 40 or so years.
That tells you how badly the democrats do that they keep giving republicans control.

I've continued to track the 538 poll compilation reporting the approve/disapprove percents for President Donald Trump for several months.

For the last 10 days, these values have held remarkably steady at about 47.6% approve and 50.7% disapprove.

That leaves 1.7% still on the fence. I suggest we can, barring something cataclysmic, expect little further change in the near future.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . informed.

I remember Roevember so well that these little swings this far off aren't going to bother or excite me whatsoever.

P.S. Trump approval ratings are now still HIGHER than they were in the close 2020 election... i.e. higher now than BEFORE he even attempted the coup and BEFORE his big lie. Go figure.

Do you have a link to the graph? Nowadays whenever I search 538, I never get the graphs they used to publish, let alone the up-to-date ones. It's as though they stopped doing it.

Hi, Slavister.

Why, of course.

Thanks. I understand the confusion now. This is not 538. This is Nate Silver's new site as he had left 538 a while ago. Unfortunately, I think 538 basically... died.

Why, of course.

All of the 10 pollsters above have Trump underwater except Rasmussen (of course).

From -3% to -10%

From what I have read, Trump is underwater on economics, immigration, foreign policy, and popularity.

Ooh ooh ooh! *Raises hand and waves frantically. An RC dunebuggy car track! Now THAT would be good. Team Associated RC-10!

Really? I'll take Clinton, Obama, or Biden over Trump or Bush anyday of the week. Their budgets were better, their economies were better, and their markets were fantastic.

From the person who thinks any brown citizen walking around without an ID is rightly subject to ICE detention... your opinion is dismissed.
I don't think that and never said that.

Most people wouldn't agree with you since Bush and Trump got elected.

lol

Welcome to the discussions.

It could also be inferred that any level of continued support for obviously oligarchical Republican power indicates how effective big money funded right wing public opinion-shaping efforts really are.

So is Trump an oligarch now because I thought he was a dictator?

It's hard to keep up with you folks.
