The popularity of the Republican Party has fallen to the lowest level in two years, a new poll has suggested. According to polling by YouGov, the proportion of people who intend to vote for GOP candidates in a hypothetical Congressional election has declined to 38.4 percent, the lowest it has been since July 18, 2023 when 38.3 percent of people said they would support Republican candidates. In the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, Republicans hold a narrow 220-213 majority, meaning a net loss of just seven seats would cost them control of the chamber. Therefore, the GOP is already under pressure to keep hold of key seats in Congress.
It is cheating, it's also a dangerous precedent. It's also not going to work. Dems in Dem states need to threaten and respond in kind because one party ramping up and the other doing nothing isn't working. Mutually assured destruction seems to be on the only thing those ghouls understand.
At the end of the day though, I doubt they can out gerrymander what's coming.
It won't, and it will.It is cheating, it's also a dangerous precedent. It's also not going to work.
Well... The problem is that all of this "Constitutional Hardball" erodes democratic norms. Even if Democrats win the house in 2026, the effects down the line may be disastrous.Dems in Dem states need to threaten and respond in kind because one party ramping up and the other doing nothing isn't working.
I don't see any positive outcome of one side adhering to norms and the other completely ignoring them. The current Supreme Court make up is because McConnell ignored norms and stopped Obama from selecting a judge. Now we have a court that is highly partisan and continually ruling in a partisan manner. It won't, and it will.
Both Democrats and Republicans gerrymander. The difference is that several Democratic states, notably California, have spent years devising non-partisan redistricting plans. And now, Republicans are nakedly redrawing lines for partisan reasons.
In one sense, Democrats will redraw their lines, if TX goes through with their attempted gerrymandering. It's also very plausible that the TX redistricting will backfire, at least in part because they are going to assume they'll hold onto all the Hispanic voters they gained in the 2024 election. If they are wrong (which is kind of likely....) then they might end up making some of those districts more competitive.
However, they are also rather deliberately eroding America's democracy and corroding faith in elections.... which I'd say is almost as important a goal as holding onto the House in 2026.

Lol - this is newsworthy?lowest level in two years
Lol - this is newsworthy?
And again, the problem is that this is going to erode norms, erode faith in elections, erode democracy, and takes away any Democratic arguments about standing on a moral high ground.I don't see any positive outcome of one side adhering to norms and the other completely ignoring them.
Newsom has already said if this passes in Texas, california will redistrict as will other blue states. It is cheating, it's also a dangerous precedent. It's also not going to work. So, what exactly happens on the other side of Republicans consistently breaking norms to gain power. No matter how bad they get, all it seems to take is some inflation or maybe a recession before they are back in power turning those dials. And again, the problem is that this is going to erode norms, erode faith in elections, erode democracy, and takes away any Democratic arguments about standing on a moral high ground.
This is not an esoteric or abstract or idealist issue. It's a real-world consequence. Meaning even if Republicans lose in the short term, the authoritarians will win another battle. No matter how you slice it, that's not a good thing.
I hope we are past that and we play the same kind of hardball they play.It is not mutually assured anything. Republicans hold more states than Democrats. If this is allowed, Republicans stand to gain more than Democrats.
Democrats need to stand up for what is right and do a better job of communicating the situation to voters.
If you haven't noticed trump started destroying norms in his first term and has continued the same in his second. I for one hope the Democrats don't just stand around and watch them gerrymander their way to complete power of government. And again, the problem is that this is going to erode norms, erode faith in elections, erode democracy, and takes away any Democratic arguments about standing on a moral high ground.

Wait till folks in the gop really start feeling trump's way of governing.Republican popularity falls to lowest level in years

This is why Republicans in Texas are redrawing the state's district lines (gerrymandering) as I post this. States normally redraw their districts every 10 years after the US Census is complete. The next US Census is in 2030.
But if Texas Republicans can get away with doing it again now, in mid-decade, they can pick up another 5 House seats by gerrymandering just before the 2026 midterm elections.
The Republicans are cheating. Again.
I have noticed. Yet again, I'm just pointing out that Democrats destroying norms will have consequences. Maybe you should keep that in mind when egging them on.If you haven't noticed trump started destroying norms in his first term and has continued the same in his second.
What norms are Democrats destroying?I have noticed. Yet again, I'm just pointing out that Democrats destroying norms will have consequences. Maybe you should keep that in mind when egging them on.
Naturally, because two wrongs make a right.I hope we are past that and we play the same kind of hardball they play.
What is right is right. What is wrong is wrong. If you use wrong to get right then the right you get is compromised.
If we do nothing but play by the rules of civility and the republicans don't, what do you think the eventual outcome will be within twelve years? A country completely controlled by folks like trump and his goons and don't you dare speak out against it unless you want to be punished to the fullest extent of their laws.Naturally, because two wrongs make a right.
