The GOP is dead. It ain't coming back. Hell, they may even attempt to change the name after 2020. My money says the people who helped kill the party - the Religious Right, the Tea Party, the QAnon, the Freedom Caucus, the Trumpublicans - will rename it the "Patriot Party". It won't make a damn bit of difference what they call it.
I think your chickens have all flew the coop, Kreton...I considered myself a slight right lean until about 4 years ago. (some won't believe it but my post history here predates 2016 election). The Republican party has changed. They are no longer conservative. They are no longer a party with any morals or values. Some will say they never did, but the party has taken a disappointing turn. They adopted some minor pocket of peoples beliefs (minor but loud) about hate and decided they wanted to be victims. They gave up on what I valued in the Republican party. I hope that this iteration of the Republican party doesn't last. The Trump version that Republicans have adopted when they sold out to follow him is absolutely anti American and they are doing nothing than dividing and ruining our country. Trump and his worshipers that sold out their morals and beliefs are going to destroy America or be defeated entirely.
So back in 2012 the republican leadership got together to try to figure out why they were losing elections.
One of the big problems they observed is that minorities thought the republican party was against them, so minorities weren't voting republican. And as minority groups continue to grow and white groups continue to shrink, this was only going to get worse.
Do republicans need to change to survive?
I doubt you can understand betting odds but the largest offshore gambling site has Trump the obvious favorite
to win in 2020. So, If you bet $100 on Trump to lose you'll get back your $100 plus $125 for winning the bet.
However if you feel Trump will win you'll have to fork out $145 to win $100. In other words Trump is the
significant favorite to win in November.
So if I were you I'd avoid such bombastic flourishes like "The GOP is dead. It ain't coming back.'
It assigns to you the attributes of ignorance. Trump has changed the entire spectrum of past voting patterns.
The Republican party that was is dead already.
It'll continue in some form since the hatred that drove right wingers to claim Obama was really a secret muslim from kenya who hated America and was racist against white people drove them to vote for Trump, and will continue to drive them to say, do, support, and vote for disgusting (if not evil, in many cases) things.

Thank you for being so kind as to explain betting odds to me. Where would I have been without your help?
The GOP is dead. It ain't coming back. You sound as if you weren't old enough to vote a couple of decades ago. There differences of opinion as to when the GOP began to die. There are people, more than a few, who believe it began to die in the 60s, mid-60s. I can't argue with that.
Personally I have never spent a great deal of time wondering when the GOP began to die. I will tell you that in my case I was just about sick of it in the early 90s. Ralph Reed and his Christian Coalition pretty much destroyed the GOP for me. Newt Gingrich pretty much managed to insult the remaining part of my intelligence that Reed and his coalition of dominionists hadn't already insulted. I didn't completely leave the GOP at that point but I considered the LP in earnest. I found Libertarians to be much more informed and intelligent than what I was seeing in the GOP. That appealed to me.
For reasons I cannot recall I stayed with the GOP and voted for George W. against my better judgment. The party left me for good not long after W took office. I no longer related to the GOP and what it had become. It was on its death bed at that point. As I said earlier the Tea Party, the QAnon, the Freedom Caucus, the Trumpublicans finally killed the GOP.
Entities evolve. They go through life cycles and they die. Or as Willie Nelson says, nothing lasts forever except old Fords and a natural stone. I'm a bit surprised that you are a binary thinker, you being a mathematician and all. Evolution isn't binary. You'll notice that as you become older. Everything changes in time. The GOP isn't what it once was. You can call it whatever you want but that won't change what it has become. What you consider the GOP sucks like a bucket of ticks.
The GOP that once was, 40 or 50 years ago, is now dead. It was a long slow and often painful death, but now it is dead. Sooner than you think all the old white guys will be gone too. Younger Americans are not going to cotton to what you love in the GOP today.
i don't think the republican party has changed that much but the democratic party changes almost daily in the agenda of pandering to their selected masses. If the democrats think thing like free stuff, diversity and pandering to minorities is going to win the presidency they are sorely wrong. What is going to win the presidency is the economy, jobs and not talking down to the masses. Straight talk and kept promises will attracts voters to their side in the 2019 election.
The party of either Bill Clinton, Obama or Hillary is no more.

RRRRRRight! Especially your eloquently phrased 'with Trump, all roads lead to Vladimir Putin'. Tell me, when did Russia become the boogeyman!
Better to stick with the party that embraces minorities.

From what i have seen at the trump rallies a good portion of that crowd attends Klan rallies too!
Maybe you should ask some older Republicans, like the ones who have already exited the GOP. Ask them why.
Ukraine elected who they elected, so your entire gish gallop about Ukraine is irrelevant to the Ukrainian electorate, because if it WAS relevant, Zelensky would not be their leader today.
Whataboutism doesn't answer what I put forth about Republicans destroying conservatism.
I'm hoping that people like Joe Scarborough and Nicole Wallace form a new conservative party. They could call themselves the "Lincolnist Party".
Lincoln was shot by a democrat..
