Record Settlement in Wake of Raid
By: The AP
Published: December 19, 2008

IFCO Systems North America, a wood pallet recycling company caught in a national crackdown on hiring illegal immigrants, will pay almost $21 million to settle charges lodged by federal prosecutors.

The government’s settlement is the largest ever with a corporation charged with employing illegal immigrants, almost doubling the $11 million that Wal-Mart agreed to pay in 2005 to settle accusations that it had used hundreds of illegal immigrants to clean its stores, said John Torres of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Prosecutors will drop charges against IFCO as part of the settlement, which includes the company’s taking responsibility for the illegal hiring.

The government should allocate this entire $21 million settlement towards increasing the pace of ICE raids on firms that hire and employ illegals. Curiously, the story says nothing at all about the illegal employees.

You are absolutely correct. I feel sorry for the illegals, actually, as I can picture myself doing the same if I was "in their shoes". However, I think we must enforce our laws, if we are to have them at all. These laws exist for a good reason.

What would you have like to have seen regarding them?

What happened to them. Were they simply fired from that job? Were they arrested? Detained? Deported?

(Did they replace the Wal-Mart illegals?) :2razz:

Usually is it s given that the illegals that are caught will be deported .What you usually don't hear about or what it seems you don't hear is what happens to the companies after the raids took place.

Personally I think those who hire illegals should face the same assets forfeiture laws and other punishments that drug dealers and other criminals who profit from and or use their assets for illegals purposes do. After all those who hire illegals are profiting from an illegal activity and they are using their money to hire illegals.

This is exactly what our immigration laws... so poorly enforced... requires. If the employers of illegals were shut down, the jobs for illegals would be shut down, and the incentive for illegals to come here would diminish considerably.

I'm glad to read about this settlement; I hope to read about many more in the near future.

Arrested - not sure what happened to them afterward. Apparently there were more than 1200 of them who were caught in the raid

Almost 1,200 illegal immigrants and seven current or former managers at a Netherlands-based firm that hired them were arrested as part of a national crackdown, U.S. authorities said Thursday.

Raids were carried out this week in 26 states at plants operated by IFCO Systems North America, which is based in Houston and makes wooden pallets and crates.

Kernel My guess is not much happened to them...granted temporary visas so they could disappear into the labor market elsewhere. They are doing the best they can(illegals) for themselves their kids, the conservative pigs that can`t get enough of their well below average construction talents. Our government and the chit worthless media isn`t on our sides. I do like the Mexicans but theres this law that says we immigrate 150K people per year... the rest is criminal and unconstitutional. I strongly believe that when you displace millions and millions of labor class Americans,in the name of great greed, you are subject to the full extent of the second ammendment The answer is overthrow every single person responsible and Then fix the problem. Hey,I think that might be 1.5 mill legal imigrants per year but from my third floor balcony it looks like there may be more like30-40 million in the last very few years...legals,and then you can triple that when you ad the illegals.
