You do realize that is 38 years old, right? How could you compare that to today?
Generally speaking, if a parent is racist, they will teach their children to be racist as well. It applies to the history of the deemed "red states" and the racial implications it has for those in the conservative party.
Yes, I agree that if the parents are racist, they generally raise children to be racist. Do you agree that many blacks are racist as well?
I wuold say that more blatant and physically dangerous racism exists in the fringe of the right, and a more subtle and socially damaging racism exists in the fringe of the left.
Whoa, that came out of nowhere. I mean, I'm sort of just viewing the discussion. Please learn some manners. So, maybe since I'm being attacked for voting a certain way, I should address my opinion.
I believe that there are racists in the republican party. People are raised a certain way and, that's just how they think. There are racists in the democratic party as well. Whether there are more in the republican or democratic party, you would need to look at social and historical tendencies within each party. I am no statistician, but I would surmise there are more conservative racists, given the historical background of conservative politics. I don't believe that is an outlandish statement at all.
That sounds pretty rational/detached from emotion to me.
All I did was pose a question, and vote a certain way.
I never said people cant have honest disagreements. Most of the country honestly disagrees with Obama's policies. I honestly disagree with some of Obama's policies including affirmative action. Even racists can have honest disagreements. Please, stop jumping to conclusions.
Also, being anywhere left of you on the political pendulum does not mean I am far left.
You're conflating "conservatives" with "Republicans". Either way, you still think "a good deal" (which would imply a majority or near-majority of them) of Republicans are racist, which would indicate that you are biased against them for no other reason than what you "surmise" to be logical. I don't think that's the result of an emotionally detached thought process, so forgive me if I seem like I'm jumping down your throat (which I'm not), but you hold a somewhat radical position.
A good deal is anything more than just a few republicans. I'd say if 25% of republicans were racist, it is a good deal. Fringe, to me, means somewhere under 10%.

I don't think there are racists in the Republican party. A racist can't survive politically, being racist is like political suicide (or career suicide for any job for that matter). The notion that Republicans are racist usually comes from a very low level of minority support or because the media says so.
A public racist cannot survive politically. What is mentioned in the comfort of one's own home or among friends is another matter.
The Republicans arguably are concentrated down South. Though I couldn't comment on the amount of racism down there right now... and I'm guessing most people down there aren't racist, I think about the South and their racism throughout history. I would find the claim that the Republican party does not have the majority of racists to be laughable. I would never say they are all racist how ever.
Just 40 years ago white people in the South killed African Americans just for wanting to ride on the bus and go to the same schools as white people. And these racists are still alive and have had kids... I wonder what they taught these kids about minorities?
Some even still wave the confederate flag for Christ sake! The confederacy's defense of slavery was shameful and disgusting, as was the South's reaction to African American's wishes for more rights.
Okay, so you admit you hold a radical position. You think at least a quarter of Republicans are racist.
You don't seem to know much about the modern South.
But by all means, continue pontificating in ignorance.
I would say a good deal of African-Americans are racist, though in a different way from other races.

If a police dept. arrests more blacks in a majority black neighborhood then its not prejudiced. If more muslims are searched in a safety check in an airport, thats not racist.
If someone shoots off the N-word against any black person, that IS racist.
Strom Thurmond was a segregationist who served in Senate for three billion years.
