ederal agents and military personnel flooded Los Angeles's MacArthur Park on Monday, prompting swift backlash from protesters and a public rebuke from Mayor Karen Bass.
Border Patrol agents on horseback joined the immigration crackdown in the sanctuary city, as demonstrators gathered in growing numbers and objects were reportedly thrown at government vehicles.
Bass shared a video of the military response in MacArthur Park on X, formerly Twitter.
"Minutes before, there were more than 20 kids playing — then, the MILITARY comes through," Bass wrote. "The SECOND I heard about this, I went to the park to speak to the person in charge to tell them it needed to end NOW."
“We don’t need to comment on ongoing enforcement operations,” the Department of Homeland Security told NBC.
I don't understand what they were doing. They weren't actually pushing civilians out of the area, as indicated by the guy with the camera up close, and really even the one making the posted video. They weren't dispersed enough to do cop things like demand ID cards or birth certificates or whatever on earth would count as proof an Angeleno isn't an immigrant. They had four horses together like they were making an apocalypse video. I have no idea, but I'd guess there's a chance they were doing their stated mission by coming to defend some kind of space around an ICE activity not shown.It does not look to me like the military is being used to guard federal facilities in this case, or to protect federal agents. They are being used as police.

Please note that showing up to film the "police state" up close, with a camera, and doing so successfully, is less a demonstration of their fascism than of their continuing respect for individual rights. It is vital NOT to immediately tar and revile everybody involved as an oppressor, if they in fact refrain from oppressing. Feed the wolf you want to win.
