Presidential decision making

Which mindset makes a better President

  • A President should make a decision and stick with it even if shown to be wrong.

Is it better to have a President that makes a decision and stands by it, even if he/she is wrong?
Or
Is it better to have a President that is willing to change their mind and be flexible to new information?


Some people will argue that a President must appear strong and that changing your position/mind displays a sign of weakness.

Others will argue that a President who sticks to their guns is "stubborn" at the expense of sound judgement.

Is it better to have a President who changes their position or one who when a decision is made...sticks to it?
 
Wow. So when you know you are wrong you still tend to want to support it?

If you got to stick with a decision until the end how about you stick with something like "I'm always ready to prove I'm flexible and willing to adapt to better ideas!"

I can accept that. That is one of the complaints that I had about Clinton. However, I do believe that a President should at least be mindful of the interests of the public....not necessarily adhere to their every whim.
However...the purpose of the post was to debate whether changing your position is a good thing or a bad thing. I understand the rationale of some people that maybe it is a good thing for a President to stand firm (even if shown to be wrong)...however, I disagree. I think you have to always keep an open mind. However, the problem with politics is that when someone is open minded and changes a position, people are quick to paint them as weak or the right-wing talking point "flip-flopper" .

Why is that? Why is it not OK in the right-wing world to change your position? Is it because most adhere to the first belief that it is always better to look firm? or is it political manipulation?

I like a president who does not ignore or misunderstand facts to make a decision like "Chimpanzee George" does..........

I'm with NP on this one actually. I dont need to know public opinion in order to form my own.

However, to answer the OP; Being a rational intellectual means you're willing to change your mind in face of the facts.

who would continue on the same path after having already been shown to be wrong

yeah, i know, you all are going to scream bush

but he has a different opinion on how things have gone
and he is privy to how things are going to go, or atleast how he is going to try and make them go

so it is not the same thing

I did not give him that name........It could be construed as a compliment on what a wheeler and dealer Clinton is.......Calling the president what you did can only be construed as and insult..........

Totally untrue AND you definitely used it as an insult. Every time you write about President Clinton it's negative and every time you write about him you call him "Slick Willie"! EVERY TIME NAVY PRIDE, EVERY TIME!

Sorry I misunderstood your intent to compliment President Clinton. However, I consider the term "Slick Willie" an insult to him. So I'll tell you want, you stop using derogatory names like "Slick Willie" and "Ice Princess Hillary" and I won't use "Chimpanzee George," OK?
