Post-debate, Trump pulls clear of competition

Being in first lace in a 17 person field is good.
Getting 1/4 of probable GOP primary voter support is not necessarily a winning formula for the nomination.

Having said that, I am overjoyed that Trump is doing well and even some establishment Republicans seem to be less hostile to the idea of Trump as a nominee. Ito only increases his chances for a Democratic miracle to happen and he gets nominated.

I am confident that if there is an after life, Barry Goldwater welcomes that happening also to erase his own low point in modern GOP national election results.

No, seriously. I believe, based on his liberal history, that he is taking down the republicans from the inside. Trojan horse, essentially.
I don't think enough GOPs care, right now. IMO, they care more about winning the general presidential election and keeping another socialist (Bernie or Hillary (seems like just about any dem, right now)) out of the White House.

And Bill Clinton is definitely not one of these new socialist politicians from the democratic party. He would be considered a Trojan horse to the dems.

I'm not. It's been fun watching Trump not cower to the political hand wringers. I'm more surprised Jeb is in second.

it's one thing to be outspoken and another to be an outspoken jackass who constantly hates on anyone who doesn't fit his extremely narrow paradigm of what america should be - that being white male heterosexual christian billionaires. I watch the repub debates for comedic value, but when trump went off about the mexican government conspiring to send rapists and murderers across the border, it made me sick and even most of the audience booed

and hiding behind "i don't have time to be politically correct," when all it usually takes is to be a decent human being, well, basic decency is a prerequisite to get my vote

I am hoping SO much that Trump gets the nomination. I don't think he'll get beaten as badly as McGovern was...but it won't be pretty. Either way, the old saying, "lay down with dogs, get up with fleas" never applied so well as it does to all the other GOP candidates who are having to ape Trumps positions in order to stay in the race, for those positions are the very ones that will cost the GOP the minority vote for a generation (or more) to come.

if trump faces hillary it will be a landslide because no self-respecting female or hispanic would vote for him

yup - its interesting to see several things happen since the debate
1- Trump holds and expands his appeal despite insulting Fox News
2 - some GOP elders suddenly are rethinking if its possible
3- Trump gets serious and issues a policy position on immigration
4- Trumps position becomes the default position that everybody else in the party suddenly has to talk about

Its all coming together for the Dems.

I don't think Trump has anymore support than this and he has gone down a bit nationally since the debate. Now just wait until people bring up that he is a crazy birther...

What's funny is that even here on DP, we've seen the opinions of the conservatives change. It's incredible - it's almost a demonstration of the old saying that "liberals fall in love, conservatives fall in line" (the saying might have originally been concerning Dems and GOPers, but the meaning's the same). We're watching a slow-motion electoral train wreck for the Republicans.

This isn't to say that they can't turn things around, but every month that goes by, the more that all the candidates play the "I'm more conservative than the other guy" game, the harder it's going to be for them to attract the crucial independent vote. My only worry is the conservative effort to suppress the vote - IMO that's their only real hope of electoral victory.

They're going thru a transitional stage where to embrace the minorities they've been hating on for decades would not be remotely believed. They have no way out of the situation they've put themselves in. It's going to take a generation for the hispanics in this country to forget that republicans tried to have them all deported, for lgbt to forget the oppression. If trump wins the nom, they may as well add women to that list. Although i'm sure he'd try some token gesture like choose palin as his VP, dems won't be as forgiving as foxnews moderators. They will plaster trump's comments, such as:

"I bet you make a great wife. But just a wife. Not a businesswoman and wife — that doesn't exist, obviously."
“The early victories by women on The Apprentice were to a very large extent dependent on their sex appeal”
"Rosie is a very unattractive person, both inside and out. Rosie’s a person that’s very lucky to have her girlfriend and better be careful or I’ll send one of my friends over to pick up her girlfriend."
“(Arianna Huffington) is unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man—he made a good decision.”
"Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again—just watch."
"I think (his ex wife's lawyer) Gloria would be very very impressed with (my penis)”

obviously that's not "only rosie o'donnell" and there are many more, but you know, for sake of brevity

He has gone on howard stern's show and miss usa pageant just to critique the sex appeal of various women

good god, for a party that tried to remove bill clinton from office for private behavior that matches the kind of sexual fantasies donald trump routinely talks about in public interviews...

really does this level of bitterness and slander and celebrity obsession sound presidential? Does using women as nothing but sex objects sound like conservative values?

His last name is why. If it wasn't for that, he'd be dead last in the lineup.
