Possible bill to ban energy drinks (Chicago)

Instead of smuggling beer into the dorms, the freshmen will be hauling in cases of Red Bull.

I really hate liberal held urban area's.

Further evidence that Chicago is just plain awful. As if we needed any more.

We could reduce the national murder rate by 5% if we sold Chicago to Canada.

Twenty two children are killed in Chicago every 4 and a half months, mostly with hand guns. People apparently shoot into houses, school buses, and randomly shoot kids playing in parks. And Chicago has fairly strict gun control.

Too bad nobody would ever buy that **** hole. They can't even produce good rappers.

At least compton and detroit have some redeeming value.

Why is every liberal city in the country turning into a police state if liberals claim to be for freedom?

I so appreciate decisions of what I can and can't do being made for me. What would I do without you big brother? On a side note, I don't even consume energy drinks.

Some group with a dog in the fight ought to challenge the constitutionality of some of these food bans. I say they wouldn't fly. If a product is unsafe? That's one thing. There is no indication that these energy drinks are unsafe food products. It's bull****.

That's ****ing awesome. I live in the western burbs but work in Chicago frequently. Can't wait to share that statistic.

Give me a freaking break. What's Alderman Burke doing about Kraft Foods headquartered there in Chicago? Nothing, is he? Should we go on about the poisonous people who direct world wide sugar addiction and sickness in the name of profit for Chicago? No, I didn't think so. Alderman Burke is a feces.

Alderman Stupid, allow me to respond in 9 letters: M-c-D-o-n-a-l-d'-s. :2rofll:

"Don't draw fire. It pisses off the people around you."

Well here the NDP hold the entirety of rural Quebec, Northern Ontario, Northern Manitoba (the largest rural riding), and the NWT. The Liberals hold Eastern PEI, Cape Breton and Newfoundland. So they hold quite a lot.

From here:

The report stated that hospitalizations related to energy drinks had climbed to 13,114 in 2009 -- up from which just 1,128 in 2005 -- according to Reuters. A whopping 16,055 visits were reported in 2008, the highest number of energy drink related hospitalizations ever recorded.

...

Cecile Marczinski, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, told WebMD that there may actually be more caffeine in energy drinks than is being reported.

Marczinski said she recently learned that manufacturers don't have to report the total caffeine that's in the drinks. They only have to list what they add. There may be much more caffeine that comes from stimulant herbs like guarana.

"The caffeine in these drinks could be vastly underestimated," she tells WebMD.

The FDA has not conducted proper research into the safety of these drinks, combined with not requiring companies to issue mandatory warnings on labeling to not mix the drinks with alcohol or give these drinks to children. If the drinks contain caffeine, taurine, and guarana, their stimulant effect is increased multi-fold.

Chicago really needs to address its violence problem, but just because it is also considering other priorities doesn't mean it has lost its way. It's not absurd or "big brother" to regulate something that can have clear negative effects. It's not something I would advocate as I believe people should be free to use substances as they please (including ones currently banned), but the partisan comments here about Chicago being too liberal in this instance are just uncalled for.

Society frowns on cigarette smokers yet we allow children to down these drinks like there's no tomorrow. That's not consistent health policy.

Actually, Chicago is plain awesome, the ideas some of its politicians get into their heads, well, yeah, they're awful...

Well, I'm glad you like it. Personally I can't stand cities with outrageous crime rates and insane poverty. Plus they're one of the few big crime cities that hasn't produced any good rappers.
