When we first decided to move back out here to Southern California my first plan was to scour the
San Pornando Valley (San Fernando Valley) to find a good deal on a former porno house, a private home that, like many in The Valley, had been remodeled and added on to in order to serve as a discreet hidden away porn studio.
Some industry "guesstimates" say that as many as four hundred private homes have been remodeled and expanded to serve as shooting locations, and most of them are not known at all, even by neighbors, precisely because the layout of such homes is necessarily discreet. The idea is to offer privacy and seclusion away from curiosity seekers and prying eyes.
I was not interested in starting up a porn shop, I just knew that these homes were enormous, most often VERY cheap and hidden away. A few even had basements built.
I didn't want to start up a porn business, I just wanted to be able to have gobs of space for a couple of video edit bays and even a nice little studio, to shoot commercials, web newscasts, podcasts, music, anything that would make money and allow me to keep most of it instead of paying facility and studio rental costs.
What finally disabused me of it was the godawful heat AND most important, the hour or more commute back and forth between The Valley and Karen's VA Hospital in Long Beach.
We finally settled on Whittier, 15 minutes away from the VA and we DID GET our big cheap nice house.
Nothing as big as one of those old Valley porno homes but certainly big enough, and and hour closer and about 25 degrees COOLER than The Valley.
A friend of mine does live in The Valley and he DOES live in one of those old adult film houses.
He bought it back in 1995 for 230 thousand and it's something like 3500 square feet plus two smaller outbuildings and a generous driveway as big as a parking lot.
Yes of course he has nice central air, but in the summertime the heat is oppressive. His house does NOT have a pool like the Boogie Nights house but that house is actually in West Covina.
I think he should put in a pool because the whole property has great big privacy hedges all the way around and he could throw some wild pool parties.
