The Pope snubbed JD Vance when he visited the Vatican on Saturday, instead having his No. 2 give the vice president a lecture on compassion, according to a Vatican statement.

Pope Francis was absent from Vance’s conversation with Cardinal Pietro Parolin. However, the statement said there was “an exchange of opinions on the international situation, especially regarding countries affected by war, political tensions and difficult humanitarian situations, with particular attention to migrants, refugees, and prisoners.”

It called for “serene collaboration” between the White House and the Catholic Church in the U.S., a seeming hint to the tensions that have brewed between the two since President Donald Trump took office.
It appears that JD is quite clueless. Nastiness, and criminality are not Christian attributes last time I checked.

Come on! Catholics aren't true Christians. Prosperity churches, rich pastors, those that flock to the White House to lay hands on Trump, them are the real Christians. The Pope is just too woke and at his advanced age maybe suffering TDS.

J D Vance needs to read his bible,

Matthew 25:35

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. Lev. 19:33-34
“Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.” Zech 79-10
He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. Deut 10:18-19

You can extend that to Trump and most of his supporters. It seems many find Christ too woke for their liking so they gravitate to a man with zero compassion...

It is about time the church shuns the amoral actors in the White House. The Trump administration and most of his followers need a good come to Jesus meeting, as their moral compasses have become scrambled. Much of the evangelical community have just allowed themselves to be corrupted by their lust for earthly political power.

I remember reading about how Trump's supporters were complaining to their pastors etc., that some of Jesus' teachings were now considered to be too weak. I'm guessing violence and retribution is now their answer, and when I say "retribution" I mean retribution for revealing via the courts what a massive criminal and liar their choice for president is.

Extrajudicial renditions of nuns, priests and bishops too.
Speaking of nuns, and as the Pope is obviously including CECOT in his description of humanitarian crises, the 1980 rapes and murders of four catholic missionaries by the Salvadoran National Guard comes to mind.

Authoritarian governments have no need for humanitarianism, and things haven't much changed.

Yes, believe it or not, that is actually a thing.... so called Christians finding Jesus too woke, wanting instead a-Christian actions against their grievances. Literally choosing Trump over Jesus...

Given this is Resurrection weekend, let us remind everyone that the Jews chose Barabbas, an insurrectionist, over "too woke" Jesus as well because Christ disappointed them that we would not overthrow Rome. It seems in 2000 years, certain parts of the church have not learned a thing. Then again, that is the curse of man: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

No. He will revoke their tax free status which would cripple the church beyond recognition.
I would agree with Trump taxing the Vatican. Tax all churches to pay for aid to the poor and universal healthcare.

Funny how there seems to be a growing trend of religious leaders attempting to get this administration to show compassion to our fellow man.

This is not the first time the pope and america have been at ods.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/28/pope-francis-raymond-burke-conservative-cardinal
Pope Francis has decided to punish one of his highest-ranking critics, Cardinal Raymond Burke, by revoking his right to a subsidized Vatican apartment and salary in the second such radical action against a conservative American prelate this month,....Burke, a 75-year-old canon lawyer whom Francis fired as the Vatican’s high court justice in 2014, has become one of the most outspoken critics of the pope, his outreach to LGBTQ+ Catholics and his reform project to make the church more responsive to the needs of the ordinary faithful.
Burke, who spends much of his time in the US at the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine he founded in his native Wisconsin, is the second American prelate to face punishment in what appears to be a new phase of Francis’s pontificate...Earlier this month, Francis forcibly removed Joseph Strickland, the bishop of Tyler, Texas, and another conservative who had become one of Francis’s critics. Strickland was removed after a Vatican investigation into governance of his diocese
It would seem the american side of the catholic church want nothing to do with thoughts of compassion and love for all.

Where have you been? Didn't you know that "Cruelty is the purpose" of MAGAs acts?

I wish, maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, but I haven't heard any pushback from Protestants, Mormons or Judaists' leaders. It's about time we've heard something Catholics. The only religious leaders really denouncing Trump's inhumane policies are Islamists', and with good cause...

Remember the inauguration? It was priceless.

Your post caused a flashback to high school when I had to study that Graham Greene book called The Power and the Glory.

That was one hell of a story.

One thing that the Catholic church as done well, for centuries actually, is charities to the poor and under-developed countries....

Note that the Wikipedia article says US Catholic Charities enjoyed contributions of $4.7B, with $2.9B coming from the US government. I wonder if that survived the Musk Chainsaw Massacre?

No. He will revoke their tax free status which would cripple the church beyond recognition.

Not that this is a real thing, but even if you attempted to impose income taxes on the Catholic Church, it would not materially affect its operations. It is not as if the Catholic church makes money. Yes, they have revenue, but they have costs and charities that take almost 100% of that revenue... Property taxes, OTH, could be crippling, but property taxes are the purview of local governments.

Moreover, the would be one place where Trump would likely aggravate the SCOTUS, as the conservative members are all conservative Catholics. So, this is a fun hypothetical, but not a real possibility.

Perhaps flying these refugees to the Vatican would shut them up on compassion. Just like when we sent them to sanctuary cities and they started complaining.

Empathy seems to be a foreign language for you.

Empathy comes easy when one isn’t overrun with immigrants and having to process them. Such as the Vatican.

There was a judge, a (then) congregant, running for public office as a Republican in 2016 who wanted to place his political placards as well as Trump's around our church. We shut that down quickly. I was disgusted then, and I am disgusted now by practicing Catholics that support Trump.
