I am not Catholic, but I do agree with this pope that many US religious conservatives have begun replacing the teachings of Jesus with ideology.

I hope and pray for a renewed church.

The conservatives he's talking about aren't catholic, and certainly don't care what the pope thinks.

That word salad from the Pope sounds like Harris.

What the hell is he trying to say?

And why should I care?

Truth is where you find it. Proving once again that even a blind pig can find the occasional truffle.

A bit late to the party.

Only in the mind of Christian Nationalist can one turn religious teachings about turning the other cheek and having compassion for your fellow man into an ideology that worships capitalists, cages immigrants, and hates gays.

All they need is the right Pope. End up with a Trumpy pope and the evangelicals will be the army for the next Crusade.

We are probably never more than two popes away from something like that being possible. Every power structure can be corrupted, the college of Cardinals isn't any different.

The thread you've linked is in a different forum, so there are no staff concerns.

For Trump supporters and American evangelicals today, Christianity is simply a label for a cultural identity. It is not about Jesus’ teachings. In fact, they get upset with any pastor who will try to actually tell them about Jesus’ teachings.

“In his NPR interview, Moore suggested that Trump had transformed the political landscape in the U.S. to the point where some Christian conservatives are openly denouncing a central doctrine of their religion as being too "weak" and "liberal" for their liking.

"Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching—'turn the other cheek'—[and] to have someone come up after to say, 'Where did you get those liberal talking points?'" Moore said.

When the pastor would say, 'I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ' ... The response would be, 'Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak," he added. "When we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis." “

I'm pretty sure the ones he is talking about are Catholic, like Cardinal Burke.

I think it’s the group, and their supporters, that wanted to deny Holy Communion to Joe Biden for not denouncing women’s reproductive rights.

The fact that this crew isn’t campaigning for denial of the sacrament to those endorsing the death penalty tells me a lot.

I never suggested there were staff concerns. I am merely pointing out that this topic was already posted today.
And I am merely pointing out that there is no need for you to be concerned.

Many in the American Catholic church support Cardinal Burke, who is a fundamentalist and extremist. Pope Francis is seen as weak and woke to the hardliners, most of who are boomers who now form the majority of the American Catholic church.

Pope Benedict and JP II said the same thing about Sandinistas , Shining Path, and gay seminarians -- and nobody listened so I conclude it has nothing to do with ideology.

All three have to hew to the authority they invoke when they speak as Pope

2272 Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,"77 "by the very commission of the offense,"78 and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.79 The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society.

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."142 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.

And you take that and this is where ideology finds its home
By fulfilling their civic duties, «guided by a Christian conscience»,[7] in conformity with its values, the lay faithful exercise their proper task of infusing the temporal order with Christian values, all the while respecting the nature and rightful autonomy of that order,[8] and cooperating with other citizens according to their particular competence and responsibility

See, the Pope could not as a Catholic mean anything else than this. Not all Popes have the gift of directness.

Before the 2016, we had a parishioner who running for office that aligned him self with Trump and wanted to distribute his campaign garbage to the rest of the congregation. He was told to GTFO.

The pontiff that promotes homosexuality and sexual sin thinks American conservatives have a screwed up religious perspective.........

OK then.....

Great story (?) with zero meaning.

Yeah? This guy was ideologue who thought his and Trump's politics aligned with the Church's.

Apparently he'd been sleeping all those years sitting in the pew.
