Pope Leo sells out US event clashing with parade on Trump's birthday

Officials have told Reuters that the planning for the Army's 250th birthday celebration started last year - before Trump won the November presidential election.
Try reading the article.

While the Army has said, opens new tab it has no plans to recognize Trump's birthday, the president will play a major role in the celebrations, which have been altered to include a parade.

The original plans were altered to include a parade on TACO's birthday. Did you think it was a coincidence? Oy.

I imagine this will be true for many. He has already affirmed the Church's stance on abortion and marriage.

I see the tickets selling out so fast. Chicago is his hometown, and the White Sox are his team.
Really? For some reason I would have guessed that he would want the pitchers in the batting order.

That's the part I love.

The Archdiocese is paying for the event.

I would have preferred either free, or 'one cent' if the ticket system required a paid transaction.

I'm sure if the ticket prices result in any surplus, those monies will get put to good use in the (Arch) Diocese though.

The Archdiocese is extremely benevolent to Chicagoans, doing a decent job repurposing schools and Churches that are becoming consolidated due to declines in active Catholics. Not sure if I ever shared this with you, but the Archdiocese gifted a Parish Church complex to a Benedictine Priory.

These guys are true Benedictines, living by the Rule Of St Benedict and adhering to the Benedictine Vow of Silence, Their monastery took the motto "Silence in the City', as they are in a busy dense urban environment at the edge of The Loop (downtown center).

You can freely visit them and partake of the Holy Mass and Eucharist, pray the Devine Office with them, and even eat with them (as long as you remain silent). The only visitor requirements is you remain silent and exhibit proper decorum & (modest) dress.

They run a B & B on part of the property. If you want to stay in it or have a retreat in it, they request a modest room rate, but will not turn you down for lack of finances. Their Charism includes feeding & sheltering the traveler.

I'm telling you, these guys may be the purist example of living the Gospel that I've ever seen!

The plans were not altered. June 14 is recognized as the birthdate of the United States Army. It also happens to fall on a Saturday this year and is President Trump’s birthday.

The fact that you are using the stupid TACO nickname shows that you are unwilling to debate in good faith.

Other than the fact he was just ordained and is from Chicago, Chicago is 700 miles from DC? yeah, I really belief the Pope is f**king with Trump.
You guys need help.

You're mischaracterizing this.

What the Church is doing is promoting her message, counter to Trump's. She's presenting a contrast.

Prove your claim that the Biden Administration planned this big beautiful military extravaganza: copies and pastes of excerpts from credible courses to which you provide the links.

Thanks for this information. Unfortunately, it doesn't indicate the Biden Administration planned such an extravagant military parade. (And keep in mind there was no military parade for the Army's 200th anniversary.)

From the reuters article:

...The White House has said the administration was planning a historic celebration for the Army's 250th birthday. The Army was established on June 14, 1775, more than a year before the Declaration of Independence.

"As one of the first events of the year-long celebration of our 250th anniversary, this commemorative parade will be a fitting tribute to the service, sacrifice and selflessness of the brave men and women who have worn the uniform," White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley said.

Trump has made no secret of his desire to hold military parades in the past.

During his first administration, he ordered the Pentagon to look in to a display of military might after a 2017 trip to France where he and French President Emmanuel Macron reviewed that country's defense forces marching down the Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Trump ultimately settled for a display of tanks and other armored vehicles during a July Fourth celebration in 2019 in Washington.

Critics have called a parade an authoritarian display of power that is wasteful, especially as Trump slashes costs throughout the federal government.

Military parades in the United States are generally rare. Such parades in other countries are usually staged to celebrate victories in battle or showcase military might.

In 1991, tanks and thousands of troops paraded through Washington to celebrate the ousting of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's army from Kuwait in the Gulf War.

By going back to his home town after becoming Pope as his first official visit? Nice try.

The article says the plans were altered. I quoted the part that says the plans were altered to include a parade. You're saying the plans were not altered and I'm the one not arguing in good faith. Oy
And TACO he is and forever will be.

Great catch, @Loulit01!

Sorry, not buying it. His hometown, first American ordained as Pope.

Trump's big beautiful parade "has been in the works for years"? If you're talking about his attempt to get a bb military parade back in his first term, sure. But if you're trying to get over that Biden planned this kind of ostentatious and costly military parade, you'll have to prove it: copies and pastes of excerpts from credible sources to which you provide the links.
..
The army has been planning the flag day event for years.

Not everything is about Trump.

AGAIN: per the Reuters article, the Army during the Biden Administration had NOT been planning a military parade. (See Post #76.)

That it includes one now is on trump.

They have been planning the event for years. Of course, details change over time.

I was in Nice, France for that. There was partying in the streets. Obama was popular but it was also the fact that a deeply unpopular US President was gone.

Little did they know...

I can't tell you the elation that permeated the Park that night. It was a real kumbaya moment. It had a 'sixties' feel to it, ironic given the gathering of young people in the Park forty years earlier.

Ironically in a very mixed crowd, the largest demographic might have been young Caucasians, many who appeared to be college kids.

A distinct minority, but still present, were the much older men & women of colour, those old enough to have lived through the Civil Rights Era turmoil. Everyone in the crowd was shouting, cheering, and interacting with each other. Everyone, including me, turned to everyone else to interact, to share our exuberant joy. You couldn't help it.

But I stayed away from the old timers of colour, even though I wanted to congratulate and high-five them. The tears they cried were just too grievous, too serious, too deep, for me to invade their solemn moment. At best, I managed to give a truncated silent nod to one or two of these old Black couples crying on each others' shoulders. But most, I let have their private moment. Of all the memories of that night, feeling & experiencing the emotions of the old-timers was by far the most poignant.

And, yeah? What the hey happened? I thought with Obama, we had finally turned the corner. Now, this.

Anyway, a million of us together, laughing, loving, and sharing, like a modern day Woodstock!

Thank you. Some here think the word "altered" means "unaltered."

No deliberate conflict on Pope Leo's part.
Thankfully, most people have the ability to watch them both because they can record the two events.

Can't wait to hear Pope Leo's message, and a celebratory mass via video, and a very Happy Birthday to our 47th President of the United States and the 250th celebration of the United States Army. I'll be watching the latter live, I suspect.

The Pope isn’t even visiting US. He is doing a speech by video.

Exactly. It will be viewed through television, as it will be with Trump (for nearly all Americans).

The Pope will be in the afternoon, leading to Trump in the early evening.

We're discussing that extravagant military parade, which wasn't in the works until trump became CinC.
