What baffles me, is that intelligent people like me and you can not overcome the illusion of popularity of masses, and form our own government, which the sheeple will then surely follow. In order to win elections a candidate needs the most votes and a lot of money. IMHO I don't think our founding fathers ever envisioned the money part of politics. Apart from any particular issue, set of issues or agenda they may or may not support, I think wealthy interests both inside and outside of America have an inappropriate level of influence in our government. It means a rich guy in The Hamptons who gives a lot of money to lobbyists and superpacs has more influence on government policy than the school teacher in Macon, mechanic in Springfield or firefighter in Yuma. Who do our elected officials work for, the voting public or the lobbyists and superpac donors who might not even be US citizens. If both then who's concerns end up being more important to represent?
