WASHINGTON — Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to closing the detention center for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay and moving some of the detainees to prisons on U.S. soil, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.
By more than 2-1, those surveyed say Guantanamo shouldn't be closed. By more than 3-1, they oppose moving some of the accused terrorists housed there to prisons in their own states.
The findings underscore the difficult task President Obama faces in convincing those at home that he should follow through on his campaign promise to close the prison in Cuba, especially in the absence of a plan of where the prisoners would go.
Government by polls, yeah. What's wrong with your brain?
It's a shame that people rely on polls to make their arguments. Is popularism really that important?
What's wrong with relying on polls to get a sense of what the pulse of America is? There is a difference between putting every issue to a poll or the ballot and using polls to get an idea of what America is thinking.
The reality here is...the left-wing continues to shoot themselves in the foot with their feigned outrage. Americans continue to see through their rhetoric.
Conservative logic: Popular opinion doesn't matter...except when it matters.
So, the Democratic party doesn't listen to public opinion polls??
Somebody better tell the guy in accounting writing all the big checks to professional pollsters.
If Obama really wants to close Gitmo, he's going to have to override some Senator's objections and put these people in one state. Considering the trouble we've had getting Reid to allow the government to dig a 30X30 hole in a goddamn mountain to bury all the nuclear waste that would be produced in the next decade, I don't think this will be easy.
Hey, if it's relevant for Supreme Court nominees . . .

Wonder if this is why President Obama is having a hard time getting congressional support for his plan.
Terrorists should not be placed in civilian prisons on US soil. That implies they are criminals under US law.I'm actually coming around to sending them all to Montana. Hardin, Montana wants them, has a big empty prison, has an armed populace in favor of taking them and so why not?

Terrorists are not criminals. They are illegal enemy combatants, operating beyond the sanction of both US law and the Geneva Conventions, and their detention needs to be reflective of this.
Under phony names and at Pelican Bay, maybe......Should we put them in :"Gen Pop"?
Under phony names and at Pelican Bay, maybe......
Put it this way:I prefer "criminal" to "enemy combatant". "Enemy Combatant" sounds almost legit, while what I think of terrorists is that they are just criminals lowlifes. Or to put it another way: I do not oppose terrorists for what they stand for, but for what they do.
Put it this way:
Criminals are people who break the law. In administering justice, the criminal is both subject to the law (and the law's sanction) and protected by the law.
The terrorist does not merely break the law. The terrorist dismisses the law. The terrorist of his own volition places himself outside the law, claims not to be subject to the law, and therefore has no claim on the protections of the law.
There is no justice in giving terrorists the protection of law. They sneer at it, they have contempt for it, so let them do without it.
That's a cop out, and a load of horse manure to boot. That's like refusing to smack the school bully because "fighting never solves anything", then standing by wailing helplessly while said bully helps himself to your lunch money. And I would like us to be better than them.
