So Putin is trying to determine what NATO's response would be to an attack on a NATO member. He got his answer and it was weak. Showing weakness to Putin is very dangerous. All Russian drones in Western Ukraine need to be shot down by NATO since they may be heading to Poland.

You have a strange interpretation of the idea of taking action against Russia. What you suggest rewards their aggressive invasion.

Actually, in the context of global conflict, that kinda is how reality works. The West has its reality; Russia has theirs. The whole point of diplomacy is to identify where compromises can be made and work from there. The problem from Russia's point of view is that they had made it abundantly clear since the fall of the Soviet Union that NATO expansion is problematic, particularly given that the rason d'etre for NATO, the Soviet Union, was essentially nonexistent - and the US and Europe kept pushing for NATO's expansion anyway. They ignored Russia's concerns throughout the 1990s and well into the 2000s. Ukraine and Georgia were the last straws.

If you mean control over Ukraine until he can be sure that their government cannot ever again entertain the thought of hosting NATO, I'd agree with that.
