Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, is polling at 18% of likely caucusgoers, behind Elizabeth Warren at 22% and Bernie Sanders at 19%. He edged out Joe Biden, who entered the race at the top of the polls in Iowa, but slipped to fourth place at 17%.

The remaining candidates are polling at 4% or less.

Released this morning, the New York Times/Siena College poll has a margin of error of 4.7%, meaning the race remains tight, with the top three in a statistical tie.

There's more good news for Buttigieg, who has been positioning himself as a moderate alternative to the former vice president. The South Bend mayor is the second choice of 31% of caucusegoers, behind only Sanders at 34%.

Iowa caucuses: Pete Buttigieg surges into the lead pack in polling

I think Mayor Pete has a real chance. He has the most momentum. And imo, he's the best candidate.

He can't even run his city. But he'll beat Trump.:lamo

Yea, please nominate St. Pete.

Did he drive it into bankruptcy and require bailouts by his dad?

He has made some ground, I was a bit surprised that he could get so far ahead because he's not really established in the party. What I like about him is that he is well spoken, intelligent, moderate, young, and he served in the military. I think he's the best the DNC has going.

Warren...I don't like her. I think she's syphoning off of Bernie's platform because it's popular. That's she's standard Republocrat (like Biden) but is just trying to ride this new wave. With Sanders I feel that he really believes it. That he believes this is the right step forward, he's committed to the platform and will fight for it. I think Warren would throw it all under the bus as soon as it became politically advantageous to do so.

So while I do like Buttigieg more, I would like to see the DNC front runners to be Sanders and Buttigieg. I think that offers the good choice to DNC voters of a progressive platform or moderate and gives the candidates who actually believe the platform they are espousing.

I have said all along that the two networks, CNN and MSNBC do not want Biden to be the Dem candidate. they have made kind of sly comments that have lead i believe to his droop in the polls. Too old, not alive enough, did not do well in the debates and may not be able to stand up to trump to name just a few. I think they do not want the Dems to run an old white guy as their candidate. It seems they want either a younger progressive candidate or a woman.

I think different hosts have different preferences. I don't think there is a lot of enthusiasm for Biden. The Biden vote is just he-can-beat-Trump. I kind of feel that way too. It's like I don't want to take any chances. I want that moron out of office. All we need is to give people an alternative to Trump not named Hillary.

But my preferred candidate on merit is Buttigieg. He's the smartest and most sensible.

Biden's half way down the drain because......

he's Biden

I don't think that Biden is really a good candidate in the end. Too much crap there, he needs to be done. I don't like Warren for the before stated comments. Buttigieg isn't really a "progressive", but I do think is their best candidate.

He's golden!

I'm not a fan of Pete, but I do enjoy seeing Biden slide into 4th. His record would be a gold mine for Trump, and I'm not sure if he's really up to the challenge of defending it.

I didnt think people in Iowa were that stupid, if that report is correct.
