Here's what they spend:

But money isn’t the issue. Pennsylvania spends about $22,000 per student — more than $4,000 higher than the national average. The Keystone State ranks seventh nationally in education funding.

Here are the results:

This academic crisis is even more dire in Philadelphia, where 82% of eighth graders cannot read at grade level, and 85% aren’t proficient in math.

Socialism, for the lose.

My solution is stop teaching them CRT and the benefits of being transgender and teach them how to read and do math instead. Teachers who spend their day teaching "Kill, kill, kill the white man!" should be fired on the spot. Any teachers with blue or pink hair, nose rings and/or face tattoos should be fired immediately. The teacher of any student who doesn't pass their grade's proficiency exam should be fired immediately. The parents of any student who doesn't pass their grade's proficiency exam should be fined 25K. Any student who can't pass their grade's proficiency exam goes to a special military school that excels in getting kids to get their shit together or get shipped off to the Russian Front.

All that time in front of a "teacher" - 6-8 hours a day being "taught" and yet 82% of eighth graders cannot read at grade level, and 85% aren’t proficient in math.

Makes you wonder what, for all that money spent per student and time invested in class, what they were being taught, if not how to read and do basic math?

How much money has the government spent on just about everything it is in charge of and what are the results? What is happening in PA's schools is indicative of what is happening in the government. Too much money being spent on bad results.

$22,000 per student. For an average class of 20 students (in my day, it was more like 30), that's $440,000 per classroom!

Pay the teacher $80,000. That leaves $360,000 per classroom.
Buy each student all their books and class materials - what? $2,000 a student? That leaves $280,000 per classroom.
Hire a principle and all their staff, plus a nurse, security, etc.
Then pay the building's utilities, upkeep, janitors, and etc.
For an average school of say, 20 classrooms, there's still $5,600,000 available. Seems doable.

Oh, and then there's the school district staff - superintendent, secretaries, offices, expense accounts....

Schools used to thrive on less than $5,000 per student - and still be able to graduate ones who could read, write, and do basic math - at a minimum.

As the previous poster stated: "Socialism for the lose."

You don't think teachers work at this???
Teachers who spend their day teaching "Kill, kill, kill the white man!" should be fired on the spot.
????? who does this??
Any teachers with blue or pink hair, nose rings and/or face tattoos should be fired immediately.
They aren't??
The teacher of any student who doesn't pass their grade's proficiency exam should be fired immediately.
Seems blatantly unfair
The parents of any student who doesn't pass their grade's proficiency exam should be fined 25K.
interesting---------I see you get it, a little.....
Any student who can't pass their grade's proficiency exam goes to a special military school that excels in getting kids to get their shit together or get shipped off to the Russian Front.
interesting------I can see the lawsuits.

Thanks for the replies !!

Perhaps teachers need better material to work with....................after all, many students DO learn

Precisely. An over-bloated nannyistic, administrative state that is literally sucking the financial lifeblood of the country out - and doing irreparable damage to the citizenry in the process.

???? what school does this??? Not in my area..........

still do, but these accounts are going by "testing" that the states give.....
As the previous poster stated: "Socialism for the lose."
So what is the answer?????

Like what? Better students? Is that their problem? Based on your OP, only 18% are capable of reading, and only 15% are capable of doing basic math. Is that the student's fault?

Same class, same teacher............why are some failing and some not???

Can you compare schools to a business?? Should similar results be required.....?/

Texas spends over 4K less than the national average per student and is ranked below Pennsylvania.

So, spending less money isn't the answer, either.

I was simply pointing out the gross discrepancy in what's actually being spent vs. what's potentially possible if the monies are spent responsibly.

What's the answer? It's not easy, but it is simple, and it is doable - because we once did it, successfully.

Quit giving "participation ribbons" for anyone and everyone to participates. Restore the meritocracy; students must earn their grades, studying, attending and participating in class, doing their homework. Quit grading on the curve. Give honest tests and assessments of a student's progress. Don't coddle them into thinking they're special while they still can't read or add 2+2. Quit teaching merely to pass the proficiency exams.

Schools need to be first and foremost places to LEARN. That needs to be their primary goal. Sports is fine, extracurricular activities are fine - as long as the primary goal of being there is TO LEARN.

I say let's do it like the democrats want. 1) Triple the budget. 2) Lower the bar. Substantially. Reading and writing skills are no longer necessary, only allegiance to the democratic party. Then blame everything that happens from this terrible decision on Trump. BUT TRUMP!!!!!

I think because some teachers are simply awful at teaching. We've all had bad teachers in our lives; and we've all had some marginal ones, and then some outstanding ones. Reward the good ones and sack the bad ones. Teaching is a skill set like anything else - and not everyone has those skills. "Help" them find other pursuits outside of standing before students who are there to learn.

I had a teacher of probability and statistics in college who couldn't answer the simplest question or explain the basics of the course. He knew the material backwards and forwards, but he didn't have a clue how to teach. About to fail that class, I signed up for another one with a different teacher - one who could actually teach. And guess what? I got a decent grade, despite probability and statistics not being my particular forte.

Some teachers are simply not cut out to teach. Reward those who are, reassign those who aren't.

That'd be step 1.

So you approve of this deficit-ridden CR that just passed the house?

When pay a garbage wage, which ones will actually leave?

Well first, I'd take it out of the hands of the federal government altogether.
Second, I'd eliminate all teachers unions and return to a merit-based system.
Third, I'd raise the bar. Expect quality results. Expect growth in learning.
If a kid hasn't demonstrated the necessary proficiency to advance to the next level, keep him at his current level until he does. There's huge incentives there.
If a teacher hasn't demonstrated the necessary proficiency to teach, show them the door and wish them well on their future endeavors - in something other than teaching.

Education has one primary goal - to educate. And frankly, it's not rocket science. Get rid of all the liberal hogwash that's indoctrinating kids today and start teaching them their three dubyas, and I guarantee you, we'll see student's proficiencies skyrocket.

That 82% of eighth graders cannot read at grade level, and 85% aren’t proficient in math is a direct shame on the Democrat Party. They own those statistics, lock, stock, and barrel.

to a point-----but those were the days before state testing, so how do we know??? Also, the family values and attitudes were quite different in the 1950-1970 era, for instance. And we always hgad poor students, even then....

I like that, but not sure that would go over.........................would threats work?? Kids come into schools these days totally unready to learn anything, so how would 'getting tough' work??? I'm not saying all kids, but a LOT of them have serious issues that supercede willingness to learn.....
Schools need to be first and foremost places to LEARN. That needs to be their primary goal. Sports is fine, extracurricular activities are fine - as long as the primary goal of being there is TO LEARN.
True-----but sports have a GREAT deal to do with success for many kids that otherwise would not make it.....

What do we do with the many kids that are totally not ready to learn anything when they step into the classroom???

good idea. How would you be able to judge good from bad with teachers??

But some kids in the class with that 'poor' teacher probably DID do well. So, how is that teacher a 'bad' one??
Some teachers are simply not cut out to teach. Reward those who are, reassign those who aren't.

That'd be step 1.
If we can figure out a way to evaluate. Teachers are highly vetted before stepping into the classroom, so now what???
