Very first thing done by the acting speaker of the house. Priorities you see.

Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry, now the acting speaker following the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy, declared the House in recess until both parties can decide on a path forward.

There is no obvious successor to lead the House Republican majority now that McCarthy has opted not to run for the job again.

why order her to vacate?

Thats what the Dems get for teaming up with Gaetz. What comes around goes around.

It was a lame attempt to earn his anti-Democrat bonafides. He's still going to have to do Speaker stuff, unless he's already given up and decided that Speaker stuff only means trolling liberals. If that's the case (and it is), then Republicans can kiss any legislative or investigative agendas goodbye. And then they'll be facing the voters in 2024.

Yup it does seem like a petty payback for her not being there and trying to save McCarthy

The dens are going to have a say in who the next speaker is 🤷‍♀️

GOP can’t herd their cats together.

Remember that Republicans couldn't agree on a Speaker the first time, and had to fight it out in public with multiple failed votes.

I expect they want to avoid that happening again. If Democrats are smart enough to vote for a moderate Republican Speaker, they only need a half dozen Republicans to deliver a crushing rebuke to the Freedom Caucus who brought down McCarthy.

Of course, Trump still looms large in Republican fears and dreams. And Democrats may not want a rational and effective House leading into the 2024 election.

Yep.

Exactly my point.

Bi-partisanship CAN prevail here.

Let’s see how it plays out.

Imagine not being there to help save the guy who scuttled the bipartisan agreement, eliminated Ukraine funding after it passed with 300 votes, undermined the 1/6 investigation, voted to deny Biden the presidency and then ordered impeachment investigation without evidence against him, and was unwilling to offer concessions (that history has shown us they can't trust anyway, his support) for their support.

Where's the gratitude?

It's another exit ramp for republicans to take if they want to get off the trumpanzees crazy highway. Will they take it or smash the gas peddle even harder? Pretty sure they will double down again and avoid the convenient exit.

Bipartisanship would help Biden, but not necessarily Democrats in Congress. Democrats might prefer if House Republicans remain unreasonable, cut funding to Ukraine, try to impeach Biden, cause shutdowns and all those other unpopular things they do "on principle". Principle being, whatever Biden is for they're against.

I'll be honest, Biden's polling is starting to worry me. If 2024 is in any way close, Dems lose the Senate, so a defensive strategy to win just the House has to be considered. At least some House Democrats will be thinking the same way: never mind effective governance, give 'em some rope.

If tRump were to be selected as the next speaker you can bet he will continue his management style of pitting team members against each other. This would only add fuel to the dumpster (tRumpster?) fire that is consuming the House GQP caucus (carcass?).

Yes, all of this is the Dem's fault for not voting to keep a Republican speaker of the house.
It's fascinating watching the whole "personal responsibility" aspect of conservatism die a slow death.

I mean...Trump as Speaker would just be him sitting at home (or in court) tweeting against people. That's it. Does anybody actually think he would appear in the House to do Speaker stuff?

Their House majority is pretty slim. As we saw with the first Speakership (McCarthy) they're not united.

A bipartisan Speaker can only happen if about 200 Democrats vote for a Republican. I seriously can't see that happening.

Republicans are going to tear themselves apart. It's worth noting that their majority is exactly the same as Democrats had under Pelosi.

He did that the last time he was in office, which is why in my mind his tenure was "The Apprentice: White House Edition". It's the premise of his old reality TV game show, but applied to governance.

You can give a scoundrel a job. But you can't make him work.
