PA gov't spokesman: People are to blame for situation

Palestinian government spokesperson and Hamas official criticizes chaos, violence in Gaza, says Israeli occupation couldn't be blamed for all; calls on Palestinians to admit to mistakes

Ali Waked Published: 08.27.06, 20:59

Soul searching in Hamas. Dr Ghazi Hamad, the spokesperson of the Palestinian government, waged scathing criticism against the Palestinian public on Sunday, blaming the Palestinians for turning the Gaza Strip into a lawless and violent place.

"Have mercy on Gaza," he wrote in an op-ed published on Sunday.

"After the withdrawal from Gaza, we hoped for a bright future, we thought that this year we will reap the fruits of our sacrifices. But I ask myself today – why did the occupation return to Gaza. The occupation – wise men and commentators will say – is responsible. I am not defending the occupation, but I want to stop at our mistakes, which we are accustomed to blame on others."

"Anarchy, wanton killing, land steeling, thuggery … is the occupation responsible for all?," he asked, saying that the Palestinians should
stop espousing conspiracy theories which "limit our thinking."

Hopes of economic prosperity and peace in the Gaza Strip after Israel withdrew settlers and troops from there have been systematically shattered as the Palestinian Authority failed to enforce law and order and provide basic services to 1.3 million Palestinians living in the tiny coastal strip.

Hundreds of dunams of agricultural land evacuated by Jewish settlers were expected to create as many as 4,000 jobs and generate millions of dollars in revenue. But corruption in the ranks of the company assigned the task of managing the land crippled the once rosy agriculture of Gush Katif and many of the land is now used as training bases by Palestinian groups.

'Let's admit we erred'

"We didn't succeed in preserving the victory of liberating Gaza. 500 people died in the Strip since the withdrawal, as opposed to 3-4 Israelis killed by rockets. The reality in Gaza today is one of neglect, sadness, and failure. When someone errs we are scared to criticize him to avoid being accused of being against the resistance," Hamad wrote.

"When efforts are made to open the Rafah border crossing to ease the humanitarian crisis, there is always someone who fires a rocket on the crossing. When we speak about a truce, there is always someone who fires another rocket."

Hamad appeals to leaders of Palestinian factions saying that resistance against Israel is worthless when "the land is full with anarchy, corruption, thuggery, and gang killings. Isn't building the homeland part of the resistance?"

He also criticized the phenomenon of kidnapping foreigners in Gaza. Two Fox News journalists kidnapped almost two weeks ago by Palestinian gunmen were released on Sunday.

Hamad said the phenomenon has become a "profitable business," charging that kidnappers of innocent foreigners apathetic to the harm their deeds cause to the Palestinian cause.

"Let's admit to our mistakes, let's do some logical soul searching and place the interest of our people before us and say honestly – We were right here and we erred there. Only then will we see that the faces of Gaza and the homeland changes," he concluded.

That is very sound advice. I hope he doesn't get assassinated for speaking the truth.

Very nice read....thanks for posting it here.

Kudos to Dr Hamad for admitting and speaking some unpleasant truths.

Dr. Hamad says it plainly. Whenever progress is being made in the Israeli/Palestinian dispute, certain elements in Gaza conspire to halt and retard this progress through violence (against Palestinians) and terrorism (against Israelis). Simply put, there are Palestinian radicals who will never accept Israel and will do everything possible to ensure that the cycle of violence/retribution continues in perpetuity.

It seems that Dr. Hamad has come to the conclusion that a lasting peace with Israel is not possible unless and until Palestinian society is cleansed of radicalism and reformed. This is analogous to the situation in Iraq where radical insurgents wreak murder and mayhem upon Iraqi civilians in desperate efforts to prevent that Muslim society from liberalizing and moving forward.

If I were him, I would definately be sleeping with a loaded weapon under my pillow.

It's a sad day when a man is murdered for speaking the truth.

i dont know ill have to research on them later hehe i wanted to hear others who did that :D

Mr. Hariri was a Lebanese Prime minister until 2004, he was assassinated by a car bomb in 2005. There are investigations running, but they didn't find someone being responsible for it so far.

Mr. van Gogh was a film director and newspaper columnist in the Netherlands. He made a short movie, which was critisized a lot by the Dutch Muslims. A young man, born in the Netherlands with Moroccon family descent shoot him in 2004.

Wherever there is turmoil and strife, those who step up to speak unwanted truths risk the peril of assassination. Sad, pathetic reality of mankind. Playing out most notably in the Muslim world right now.

He was never like Dr ML King....

Malcolm found work as a shoe-shiner at a Lindy Hop nightclub; in his autobiography, he says that he once shined the shoes of Duke Ellington and other notable black musicians. He was also employed for a time by New Haven Railroad, a job he would maintain when he relocated to New York City in 1943.[4] After some time, in Harlem, he became involved in drug dealing, gambling, racketeering, and robbery (referred to collectively by Malcolm as "hustling").

When Malcolm was examined for the World War II draft, military physicians classified him to be "mentally disqualified for military service." He explains in his autobiography that putting on a display to avoid the draft, he told the examining officer that he couldn't wait to get his hands on a gun so he could "kill some crackers". His approach worked, and he was given a classification that ensured he would not be drafted.

In early 1946, he was arrested for a series of burglaries and received a sentence of 10 years. While in prison, he received correspondence from his brother Reginald telling him about the Nation of Islam, to which he subsequently converted. While in prison, he read voraciously and developed astigmatism. He was in regular contact with Elijah Muhammad during his incarceration and went to work for the Nation of Islam after his parole.

But you neglect the rest of his story, cherokee....that being he came to reject the Nation of Islam and their divisive teachings and, as a consequence, was assassinated for his change of heart.

No sweat, cherokee. Although, we will never know what he might have accomplished.

PS. you get much rain lastnight? We didnt get jack........

Very little during the day....but sometime in the middle of the night - out of nowhere - we had some heavy rain. No wind, no thunder or lightning, just a stick-straight downpour of water that lasted maybe five minutes. Bizarre...

Well, to be honest, I don't know much about the Nation of Islam, and frankly, I think they are a bit of a non-entity in this day and age. I don't equate them with terrorists or other Muslim extremists in that they have never been involved in violence or terrorists acts....although, the question of their involvement in the assassination of Malcolm X was never resolved to my knowledge. Their shtick seems to be community service, which I believe they do a lot of, punctuated with the occasional notoriously inflammatory speech by what's-his-name every now and then. Pfft.....
