Our President is actually bragging that Americans must pay more to the government

Matters just got worse. A lot worse as the full force of Trump's tariffs take hold today.

From this day forward, things will gradually get more difficult.

Trump and friends brag about the fact that the federal coffers will increase by the billions. They don't mention the fact that American consumers, importers, and businesses will be paying the billions to Trump's government.

Republicans will continue their silence. They are busy looking for rocks to crawl under. They are responsible for this.

The AP reports, "Trump began imposing higher import taxes on dozens of countries Thursday just as the economic fallout of his months long tariff threats has begun to cause visible damage to the U.S. economy.

"Just after midnight, goods from more than 60 countries and the European Union became subject to tariff rates of 10% or higher. Products from the EU, Japan and South Korea are taxed at 15%, while imports from Taiwan, Vietnam and Bangladesh are taxed at 20%.

"Trump also expects the EU, Japan and South Korea to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the United States. (???)

"So far, however, there are signs of self-inflicted wounds to the U.S. as companies and consumers brace for the impact of the new taxes.

"Hiring began to stall, inflationary pressures crept upward and home values in key markets started to decline after the initial tariff rollout in April, said John Silvia, CEO of Dynamic Economic Strategy.

“I think the growth is going to be unprecedented,” Trump said Wednesday. He said the U.S. was “taking in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs,” but did not provide a specific figure for revenues because “we don’t even know what the final number is” regarding the rates."

If Trump's tariffs were not so tragic for our country, I would be laughing my fool head off at that incredulous statement.

His base will believe it.

Trump is an idiot surrounded by idiots. He lies to his rural base because he knows they will believe him.

That says it all!
Actually, that says nothing since Americans aren't paying at all...at least, not all Americans. Only the ones who decide to buy the high priced shit.

The people who pay are the American importers on the dockside, and then their customers!

The importers pay the tariff to Customs and Border Protection, who puts the money into the Federal Treasury. If the importer decides to pass the cost on to the consumer, the consumer of the imported goods pays the cost to the retailer. Consumers who choose not to buy the imported product don't pay the tariff.

Wharton professor William Kelley said of Donald Trump: ‘Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had!’”

"Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose."

Yep, that’s how federal tax increases work. Another example of a (coming soon) federal tax increase is the Medicare Part B premium will increase (by 11.6%) from $185/month to $206.50/month in 2026.

If (when?) the cost (price) of imported widgets goes up by 20% then what do you expect will happen to the cost (price) of domestic widgets?

While technically correct, the comment does not include everything.

The price of an item is determined by how much a company has to pay to put that item in front of a consumer, if the company has to pay more because of tariffs then they will increase price to compensate.

The problem with the way Trump is doing Tariffs is that he is doing everything, not specifying to bolster American products. This means most people will end up purchasing items that have increased because of tariffs.

Laughable. I went to Walmart to buy coffee, what cost me $14.95 two weeks ago now cost me $19.95, so coffee is on your high prices shit? How about bacon, beef, and a host of other price increases for a host of food products.

Say what you will trying to defend trump, just keep paying the same high prices as the rest of us...or are you one of the folks getting gas for $1.95?

So are you going to starve yourself or pay the high prices for American beef? I have an idea for the gop, just don't buy anything, just think of the money you will save. Let's not even begin to talk about a sore subject of trump's, bacon.

It's a regressive Republican consumer tax.

The truth never makes sense to people who are ignorant.
Is that what drives your posts?

Total nonsense. Raising the cost of foreign widgets to make domestic widgets competitive does not lower the cost of widgets. It does not give Americans a choice. It takes away choice.

The American made goods are the high-priced shit. Now it's all high-priced shit. There is no decision to make.

Therefore, this...

Raising the cost of foreign widgets OVER the cost of domestic widgets makes people buy more domestic widgets which supports domestic manufacturers which supports domestic workers. So, even if the price increases a bit over the pre-tariff prices for foreign widgets, the US benefits in the end.

Raising the cost of foreign widgets OVER the cost of domestic widgets
Is that what's happening?

Raising the cost of A to more than the cost of B does not bring down the cost of B. Indeed, the typical effect of this is the price of B gets raised to the price of A.

makes people buy more domestic widgets which supports domestic manufacturers which supports domestic workers.
???

What it does is leave less money in people's pockets which results in less goods being sold.

Did you understand inflation during the Biden years?

So, even if the price increases a bit over the pre-tariff prices for foreign widgets, the US benefits in the end.
Nobody benefits from inflation. Nobody. Not workers, investors nor the government.

Tariffs, unlike the transitional inflation caused by covid, don't go away naturally. Things don't get better. The economy contracts, standard of living decreases, and that's where it stays until the tariffs are rescinded.

What if the US does not currently make the "widget"?
What if there is no interest in building the widget plant in the US by any company?
What if the US does not have the raw material to build the widget and the material must be imported?

There are products the US consumer likes that are not made in the US and the US may never have the ability to produce the product. I suspect the US cannot grow all food products the US consumer likes to purchase.

imo, Trump has a dream that cannot be fulfilled. Not saying some manufacturing shouldn't be brought back to the US. Just saying that not everything can be produced in the US.
