After defeating in succession, Norway (1-0), Denmark (1-0), Belgium (2-1), Sweden (2-0), England (3-0) and Denmark again the final with 4-2, the Dutch women, in their 4th end tournament ever, have won the European Soccer Championship for women.
Netherlands Women 4-2 Denmark Women - BBC Sport
The Dutch defeated Norway, the number 11th ranked team in the world, the 9th ranked team in the world Sweden and England the number 5 ranked team in the world. The English had knocked out the number 3 team in the world (France) before falling to the Dutch with 3-0 and in the Final the Netherlands defeated Denmark who knocked out the strongest European women's soccer team out of the tournament (Germany, 2nd in the world ranking).
The Netherlands had the help of tens of thousands of screaming supporters (as the event was held in the Netherlands) but as we all know, they do not stand on the field, that is down to the players.
This is the way they walked from the Town center of Enschede to the soccer stadium of FC Twente
No soccer violence, no hooligans but pure fun and entertainment.
Congratulations! A moment's confusion since the England team are also nicknmed "The Lionesses" but what a great demonstration of skill. Once England were knocked out, then the UK switched to cheering for the Dutch. While coverage has been greatly increased for this tournament, it's still not at the wall-to-wall level given to the mesn' game. Yet.
Yup, I remember times when women's football really bored me on account of being so slow, so lacking in athletics and so lacking in skill.
Not the fault of the women at all, far more that of the various football associations and clubs for treating this field in such a negligent way.
Thankfully far more effort (and money) is now being invested both on club and national level in far more countries and the results (not just that of today) are a pleasure to behold.
With today's match having been one of the best I've seen all year, certainly better than many of the men's.
Also great to see that the meanwhile tedious dominance of Germany came to an end.
So, congrats Oranje meisjes, you truly were "op Jacht" (on the hunt).

It's amazing how much home field can be an advantage.
