While I agree with you, most Americans don’t. Democrats are seen as soft on illegals and soft on crime, Trump as being tough. Crime is mostly a local issue and most crime happen in the big cities under democratic control. Usually the mayor is democratic along with the city council.
Compare Trump to Biden on handling crime, 49% approve of how Trump is handling the crime issue, 38% approved on how Biden and his administration handled crime. Immigration is basically the same, 50% of all Americans approve of how Trump is handling this issue compared to just 33% for Biden.

Illegal immigration seems to be the driving force in effecting how people look at how Trump is handling the situation and how democrats handled it. The democrats with their sanctuary states and cities, protecting illegals from ICE and from existing immigration laws. Then too you have the top ten cities with the highest crime rates, all controlled by democrats.
