Opinion - At the first whiff of power, these Republicans betrayed the rule of law (1 Viewer)

Hegseth is an idiot, which is why Trump supports him. The last thing Trump wants is a secretary of defense with a brain. Stupidity is easily managed.

Many wonder how Republican Senators feel about confirming Hegseth as SecDef. We will never know. Republican Senators avoid any mention of the Trump administration unless forced by circumstances to face the inept White House.

This is incomprehensible. It is the second time for Hegseth in a few short Weeks.

CNN reports, "Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared detailed plans about a military operation against the Houthis in Yemen on a second Signal group chat, this one on his personal phone and including his wife, lawyer and brother, three people familiar with the chat told CNN.

"The revelation comes as some of Hegseth’s closest advisers have begun sounding the alarm about the secretary’s judgment, including his former press secretary, John Ullyot, and three former senior officials Hegseth fired last week — his top adviser Dan Caldwell, deputy chief of staff Darin Selnick, and Colin Carroll, who served as chief of staff to the deputy secretary of defense.

"Similar to the first Signal chat, which was revealed publicly by The Atlantic after its editor was mistakenly included by national security adviser Mike Waltz, the military plans Hegseth shared in the second chat were about strikes against the Houthis, the people said.

"Hegseth’s brother Phil, as well as his lawyer Tim Parlatore, both have jobs at the Department of Defense. But his wife, Jennifer, does not, despite Hegseth regularly including her during the beginning of his tenure in meetings with foreign leaders."

Trump's reaction to all this was predictable. To cover up a security breach by his inept SecDef, Trump made a weak attempt at humor followed by lies.

“There’s no dysfunction at all. Ask the Houthis how much dysfunction they have,” Trump said, adding, “Pete’s doing a great job. Everybody’s happy with him, It’s just fake news. They just make up stories. I guess it’s — sounds like disgruntled employees. He was put there to get rid of a lot of bad people, and that’s what he’s doing."

No wonder Republicans say nothing.

So then how will it work?

What's going to stop ICE agents from "mistakenly" arresting you on the street, and shipping you to Venezuela?
I suspect someone might or might not have a Eureka moment on why this affects some citizens in this country more than others. I am hoping we can see this evolve in this thread.
:)

Yes illegals are guaranteed due process by the constitution.
What is the "due process?" Is it one set of steps that must be taken in every situation? Or is it the steps to be taken according to a specific law? If the Congress passes a Bill and the President signs it into law,can it define a process to be taken to enforce that law? What is the "due process" that must takes place before one can be audited by the IRS? Is there a "due process" to ban people from sleeping on your front yard, or can you just have them removed by the local police?

Are you under the mistaken opinion the the Fifth Amendment defines what "Due Process" is?

For how long can you lawfully be held in police custody, that is, be "deprived of liberty" without seeing a judge?

The fact that I have an accessible life history going back, if necessary, to my birth, to my naturalization, to the issuance of a green card, or a legal visa.

Oh my God you have no idea what due process is.

The due process as it pertains to deportations is not a mystery. It is spelled out. Learn

What is absolutely clear is that the Trump admin violated the law and the constitution and is defying court orders.

Even Reagan appointed, appelate justices are appalled by what Trump did

"The administration is “asserting a right to stash away residents of this country in foreign prisons without the semblance of due process that is the foundation of our constitutional order,” wrote Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson in an opinion for a panel of the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.

“Further, it claims in essence that because it has rid itself of custody that there is nothing that can be done,” he wrote. “This should be shocking not only to judges, but to the intuitive sense of liberty that Americans far removed from courthouses still hold dear.”

How on earth you people can continue to defend blatently unvonstitutional behavior from the Trump Admin. is beyond me.

You probably claim to be a patriot.

Lol.

Every day the Trump regime tramples the rule of law makes Americans less free and less safe.

Every day the president defies the Constitution and courts makes America less America.

President Trump is increasingly acting like a king or dictator who rules by decree, and whose decree is all it takes to make someone disappear.

That’s now happening here, and with the full support of people like House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who has long portrayed himself and the Republican Party as advocates for the rule of law.

Not expecting a lot of responses from the right, mostly yeah but Democrats sort of thing and what about Biden? Never mind what they might read, that doesn't impress them, those things called facts.
Not much respond required this should suffice :

This fright piece is all about one thing: the deportation of illegal aliens. The question is, Do illegal aliens have all of the legal protections that citizens have under the Constitution? And if the answer to that is given as "Yes, the next question that must be asked is, "Why?"
Citizenship for the foreign born is achievable, but only after conditions set in the law are met. Yet illegal aliens, that haven't met even the least of those conditions, are "awarded" the protections of our Constitution merely by breaking our most basic of immigration laws.
I believe the Constitution should be amended to remove those protections from those who are not lawful residents in the country, specifically with regard to immigration law. People who break into the country should know, beforehand, that they will not be protected from removal by the laws that they have flaunted.

If illegal immigrants don’t have due process, then *you* don’t have due process. All the government has to do is claim you are an illegal immigrant and they can do whatever they want to you. After all, how are you going to prove you aren’t one? You won’t have due process.

I suggested a Constitutional Amendment removing that protection from illegal immigrants for purposes of immigration law. Why? Because I don't believe that people whose first act in this country is to break our laws, should be rewarded by giving them the immigration protection of our laws. They've already told us what they think of our law.

That amendment has about as much a chance of being ratified as an amendment banning heterosexuality would.

I know what THE due process is.

Please quote me as defending anything. I've made a suggestion as to how these cases could be handled in the future

You bet. That's why I suggested clarifying the Constitution and the law, rather than have this whole situation dependent on whether any President is willing to ignore the law to let people into the country, or willing to ignore the law to deal with any that come in illegally.

I suggested a way to make sure that the due process and related laws are more clear and, frankly more effective. You're complaining about what can happen without that change.

How would that be prevented? There wouldn’t be any due process. ICE could simply say anyone is an illegal and immediately deport them. They wouldn’t have any due process to show they are actually an American citizen.

How about just insist that presidents obey the law, the constitution, and court orders?

Kick them to the curb if they don't.

When are Trump supporters going to kick him to the curb?

Democrats will help them.

Trump is ecstatic. The Democrats and the media are doing exactly what Trump wants them to do. They are talking a lot about immigration, freeing a man falsely imprisoned, and court decisions.

Both are minimizing the disastrous economic effects of Trump's tariffs and the loss of our friends and allies because Trump targeted them.

The Democrats and the media are providing only lip service to our declining economy, increasing inflation, higher unemployment, and a horrendous loss of retirement savings since Trump became President.

The Guardian reports, "A delegation of four House Democrats has arrived in El Salvador to push for the release of Kilmar Ábrego García, part of a mission to challenge the Trump administration’s refusal to comply with a supreme court order to facilitate the return of the immigrant to the United States."

This is great news, according to Trump because the Democrats and the media are not talking about this.

US stocks ended the day sharply lower Monday and the dollar tumbled as investors assessed continued tariff uncertainty and the implications of President Donald Trump’s ongoing mission to try and oust Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

The Dow fell 972 points, or 2.48%. The broader S&P 500 fell 2.36%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 2.55%. The three major indexes slumped throughout the day before pulling back slightly in the afternoon

The sell-off on Monday was widespread, as nearly every company in the Dow and the S&P 500 closed lower. All three major indexes are coming off of a week in the red and are on pace for their worst month since 2022.

The US dollar index, which measures the dollar’s strength against six foreign currencies, slumped more than 1% to its lowest level in more than three years.

Despite the obvious fact that it is Trump's tariffs and loss of friends -- Canada and the U.K. come to mind --causing the problems, Trump, as usual, blames someone else. He lambasted Powell for not cutting interest rates.

“If I want him out, he’ll be out of there real fast, believe me,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday. “I’m not happy with him.”

The media should be aware of its responsibilities. They need to do better at covering the problems Americans are facing that were caused by this President.

They could begin with this. Senior Americans have lost billions in retirement savings since Trump became president.
