Were you as concerned about the low numbers this polling metric has been in the past as well? The fact it's not been over 50% since July of 2003 means people don't seem too happy with the country's direction across a variety of presidents:

"We have never before seen this level of sustained pessimism in the 30-year-plus history of the poll".

Seeing as how Christo-fascists are a coin flip away from controlling the Executive branch…. Yeah…. Wrong direction.
The 21% who think we are heading in the right direction are further in the minority.

Just surmise in my part, but it seems there are people who will always have something to complain about regarding our economy.

People have unrealistic expectations on how things work….

Its just not the economy people are complaining about. Its much more than that.

Americans are a grim bunch. We need more immigrants and the optimism they bring to the country.

That’s horrible news. All under our geriatric fAiL Joe Biden who Obama didn’t think much of.

Once again we are treated to the most useless of all polls. No matter who the President is, 45% will automatically consider the direction the wrong one. Of the remaining 55% 15-25% of them will feel either we have gone too far (to the right or to the left), or we have not gone far enough( to the right, or the left).

What does Biden's 42 job approval have to do with the direction of country average polling? And are you pleased with some Biden 42% job approval rating, 2/10 higher than his average? Do you think that's a positive or good job approval rating? In what way are the polls "funny that way

Let's move to your second point - "Biden beating Trump by 3 in the National....". Do you mean in the general election? Is this polling you are feeling positive about or polling making you think "Polls are funny that wa
Not complicated. The "direction of the country" dropped but Biden's approval rating held pretty much steady. People are very unhappy with the direction but still prefer Biden to Trump in the election for President. This suggests to me that the unhappiness isn't all about Biden. Polls can be funny that way , they can suggest different things to different people. This particular poll is like that in my opinion..

Until polls ask why Americans are unhappy we really don't know why. I am quite certain that liberals unhappiness is quite different than that of conservatives.

Based on Gallup's polling on the same question and that goes back 42 years. Based on Gallup's polling, we've seen similar numbers during the 07-08 recession. Americans have been sour on the direction of the country since 2003 and it's all been a decline since then. I'm not sure who gets to boast about how low numbers are in comparison to other low numbers.

The right track/wrong track is a very poor election predictor if this is what you’re getting at. The best election predictor is looking at the favorable/unfavorable ratings of both major party candidates. With the exception of 2016, the candidate with the highest favorable rating has won. But 2016 was an election when both major party candidates ratings were in the tank, when most Americans didn’t want neither one to become president. They set the record for the lowest favorable and highest unfavorable since this stat was kept track of. Only 3 presidential candidates has had a favorable rating below 50%, Trump twice, Hillary Clinton and Barry Goldwater way back in 1964. Only 2 presidential candidates have ever had an unfavorable rating of over 50%, again Trump twice and Hillary Clinton. Here’s the list, highest to lowest favorable.

Highest to lowest favorable/unfavorable ratings of each major party presidential candidate.

Favorable/unfavorable

1956 Eisenhower 84/12%

1964 LBJ 81/13%

1976 Carter 81/16%

1960 JFK 80/14%

1960 Nixon 79/16%

1968 Nixon 79/22%

1976 Ford 79/20%

1972 Nixon 76/21%

1968 Humphrey 72/28%

1984 Reagan 70/30%

1980 Carter 60/32%

1984 Mondale 66/34%

1980 Reagan 64/31%

1992 Bill Clinton 64/33%

2008 Obama 62/35%

2012 Obama 62/37%

1956 Stevenson 61/31%

2004 G.W. Bush 61/39%

2008 McCain 60/35%

1992 G.H.W. Bush 59/40%

2000 G.W. Bush 58/38%

2004 Kerry 57/40%

1996 Bill Clinton 56/42%

1988 G.H.W. Bush 56/39%

2000 Gore 55/43%

2012 Romney 55/43%

1972 McGovern 55/41%

1996 Dole 54/45%

1988 Dukakis 53/42%

2020 Biden 52/46%

1964 Goldwater 43/47%

2020 Trump 43/56%

2016 Hillary Clinton 38/56%

2016 Donald Trump 36/60%

That's an odd conclusion from that link. For the majority of President Trump's term, it was almost 20 points higher than the current rate.
Whatever.....I don't think that scrambled mess would allow anybody to assert anything, ever. Right track, wrong track...what a joke. It will allow the yammerers to yammer and that is about it. Of course yammering is what we get out of purported news outlets more often than not.

I would be part of the % that thinks the country is headed in the wrong direction.

But that’s largely due to the laws being enacted around abortion, Moms of Liberty and schools banning books, DeFascist and his war on the LGBT, etc.

The poll, while amusing, is essentially valueless. All that can be derived from it is speculation, nothing more.

What is actually required are in-depth interviews with a statistically valid selection of people. Then, and only then, we can obtain some level of understanding of the beliefs behind the numbers. That approach, though, requires a skilled group of interviewers. It comes at a price considerably above that required for the poll charted above.

As in many things, you get what you pay for.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . 'n informed.

The poll itself is revealing, unfortunately we see political spin suggest a person or a party is to blame.

NBC phrases this as "Now, all in all, do you think things in the nation are generally headed in the right direction, or do you feel things are off on the wrong track?" Which is a sentiment question covering just about everything including levels of government (federal, state, what have you) and things like the economy or just about anything else.

The real details on these polls are in the subsequent questions. More disapprove than approve of Biden's performance. People are seemingly pessimistic of the economy, our aid to Ukraine (which surprised me,) and our general foreign policy. In both named politicians and party approval in Congress, no one did well. In general feelings about... Biden, Trump, Harris, McCarthy, Jefferies, and Schumer all generally disliked. Higher in "very negative" over other categories with the exception of Jefferies who seemingly no one knows.

Statistically speaking by these very polls in aggregate, no one is doing well and no one is very happy about things.

More importantly, neither Republicans or Democrats in *any regard* get to claim victory on this.

That is the real story, our divisions between modern conservatism against modern liberalism, has alienated and made pessimist far more people.

Congrats!

Yes, according to this poll, no one is doing well.

According to Gallup (post #9), nobody is doing well except the person in the mirror. That's why I dismiss these right track/wrong track polls.

People see their own situation as being better than the country's. Individually, this is reasonable, but if 85% say they're satisfied with their own lives, but only 17% say they're satisfied with the country, what good are these numbers really?

A good example for why the entire concept of right track/wrong track as some sort of measure in an absolute sense is beyond STUUUUPID, beyond oblivious and all the way into crap for yammerers to yammer about.

The only "good" from those numbers is yet another illustration on how many people out there feel entirely removed from whom is doing the political talking. If the overwhelming majority are doing well themselves but pessimistic on the pulse of the nation it should give us a real pause on the real divorce of people and the political bubbles of left vs. right.

Hi, OrphanSlug.

We appear to share something [Political leanings independent and other,] in that both of us appear positioned outside the liberal and conservative groups. This provides us with, hopefully, a perspective shorn of much of the emotional reactivity found in those two groups. The blame game which seems to be one of their prime concerns takes up much of their 'thinking' about the issues which our society presently faces.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

People who respond to polls are confused.

Everybody is doing well, but the country isn't.

Bitching about the government is sport. It doesn't reflect reality in the slightest.
It just proves the RW propaganda is very strong. If everything was going in the wrong direction, it stands to reason 85% of citizens wouldn't think things are A-OK in their personal lives.

That’s horrible news. All under our geriatric fAiL Joe Biden who Obama didn’t think much of.

The biggest RW megaphone has been working overtime to jade people into believing everything sucks. That megaphone was just proven to lie constantly to the tune of $785 million dollars.

Perhaps if you took the time to research some of the accomplishments that have been made in the last 2.5 years, you may see things a little differently.
