New York (CNN Business) One of the country's largest pork processing facilities is closing until further notice as employees fall ill with Covid-19. The closure puts the country's meat supply at risk, said the CEO of Smithfield, which operates the plant.

"The closure of this facility, combined with a growing list of other protein plants that have shuttered across our industry, is pushing our country perilously close to the edge in terms of our meat supply," the meat processor's chief executive, Kenneth Sullivan, said in a statement Sunday.

"It is impossible to keep our grocery stores stocked if our plants are not running," he said. "These facility closures will also have severe, perhaps disastrous, repercussions for many in the supply chain."

This new news comes fast on the heals of the closing of a very large Colorado meat-packing plant on Friday, with its three thousand employees. And these two plants are not the only meat processing facilities closing down.

Both plants are very large plants, producing 4-5% of the nation's pork production each. It may sound like no great loss individually, but when you start adding them up they can make an impact. Hopefully they get these plants back up & running, but I think we should be keeping an eye out for possible supply chain problems.

Smithfield is Chinese owned so screw em.

BTW I did buy a few extra boxes of Swaggerty's Farm and dropped in the deepfreeze early on just to be safe.

Ironically Smithfield is Chinese owned...

Chinese owned? Interesting. I remember when "Smithfield" was specifically an air-cured ham from Virginia.

But Chinese owned, or not, we need a meat supply.

Yeah, I went pretty nuts myself - a few weeks ago. I'm still set for a coupla' months. Not complaining, either.

Pork and seafood are the only meats I really eat so I got the sausage and several bags of frozen scallops.

If this goes on for months it is possible we hear of some utility in the country which may have to shut down. This is a pretty big deal!

I expected to read: "The entire House of Representatives and the Senate have decided to take a vacation until further notice" :)

Now you're talking!

Any bacon to wrap around 'em?

Let's not talk about that. My wife's been harping about the possibility, because back in her old country electricity is a pretty spotty affair, and there's always some disaster going on.

I know someone who uses well-water. His wife insisted they stock up on bottled water just in case that happens. We both laughed about it two months ago,not so much now!

They're not the only ones with wife-induced bottle water stores! :lamo

I have bacon but don't do that with scallops. I really don't eat a lot of meat other than seafood. The couple boxes of sausage will last me til mid to late summer. I buy the sausage mainly to add a few patties into dirty rice just for flavor or to break up into omelettes.. With the scallops I just fry in duck fat or coconut oil and season. That is it. I will once in a blue moon fry a few strips of bacon for my dog but mainly I keep it for seasoning beans and such. Not really why but I eat less and less meat every year, at least land-based meat. Even with dirty rice and omelettes, I will still pick out most of the meat and give to the dog. My sister thinks I may have picked up alpha-gal syndrome from a tick bite or something because I used to be able to eat a cheeseburger for breakfast lunch and dinner days a week.

This could be sooo much worse if there had not been lockdowns. This scenario would be happening on most work places causing many more to be hospitalised and more deaths. And the work places would have shut down due to all workers being sick at once or with in the 2 to 4 week period of most infections.

True, we do need the healthy supply chains for food and agriculture to stay intact. But if Smithfield goes out of business then I'm fine with that. The other pork producers will take up the slack without Smithfield.

Smithfield BTW exports a lot of their products to China. So I couldn't care less if China starves or just sinks into the ocean or burns up. American companies selling out to China needs to stop. China is our enemy.

Maybe this will lead to more people buying locally processed meats. That would be a win for everyone.

Fiscal conservatives have been warning ppl about the how China has had control over us for decades. Liberals laughed at Trump when he warned us about the trade problems with China. Back in the day when America was producing their own PPE, medicines, etc. the greedy unions began forcing companies to pay workers unusually high pay to the point companies left. The government also taxed too much forcing American businesses to find less hostile territory. Thank the dems for forcing business out of the country. Now look at the mess we are in today. The Chinese control our vital supply chain. We can’t even get hand sanitizer, thermometers , masks, ventilators etc. Thank the dems for keeping the borders open and encouraging illegals to further bankrupt the country when we can’t help the ppl who are not allowed to work while we feed clothe and support illegals still coming into the country as we speak.

I'm not sure how much slack there will be. Smithfield may be one major supplier, but I'm aware of the other large one in Colorado, and the article claims there's quite a few others.

Say, isn’t this plant in South Dakota? You know, one of those states without one of those draconian stay at home orders? I hear the governor just talked to Jared and they are going to start using Trump’s Miracle Elixir and will be curin hundreds soon.

That "enemy" donated 1000 ventilators and 200,000 masks to the US, and over 100 other countries have also received large donations of equipment from your "enemy". Your real enemy is the feckless idiot in the White House.

Do you consider food production workers critical? Should they have shut this plant down in Feb? Did you know what percentage of South Dakota's total infections are from this one, single food plant?

Complete ignorance, unless you are suggesting national and international food processing production should be shut down across the board.
