Ohio Statehouse Democrats demand Gov. John Kasich embrace diversity, add minorities to his all-white cabinet | cleveland.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A group of Statehouse Democrats -- black, white, Indian-American and Hispanic -- accused Gov. John Kasich Thursday of racial discrimination and demanded that he name minorities to his cabinet.
Kasich's early record of hiring only white people for his cabinet -- and his defiant defense of it, likening diversity to quotas -- has ignited a firestorm of racial tension for the Republican governor.

"The governor continues to look for qualified people to serve Ohio in his administration, without regard to race," the statement read. "More diversity and more inclusiveness are goals to which the administration is committed and to which we strive, just as our society strives toward them as well, and that commitment is ongoing."
The statement said that Kasich welcomes suggestions for qualified applicants.
But the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus said the governor has refused its requests for a meeting and rejected its offer to help find qualified minorities. So it has set up a website, Work for Ohio | I am Qualified Ohio, and said it will deliver names to the governor.
The caucus also questioned why Kasich has not released all the resumes collected during his transition into office so that the names of candidates the governor has passed over can be known.
Kasich has hired 22 of his 23 cabinet leaders and, like him, all are white. With one cabinet post left to fill, Kasich could be the first Ohio governor since 1962 to appoint an all-white cabinet.

"What we have here is a governor who has misunderstood the term (diversity). . . because in a meeting with the Senate Democratic caucus, he used the words racial quotas," said State Rep. Carlton Weddington of Columbus. "That's not what we're talking about here. That is something totally different."
In that meeting last week, Turner said she offered to help Kasich find qualified minorities. But in a heated exchange, she said, the governor told her, "I'm not going to hire your people."
Turner said she wondered if "your people" meant black people.
