Being outed by his sleep aid as someone with discriminatory tendencies may erode the public's trust in his ability to fairly do his job. The article doesn't mention prior disciplinary action against him for racist or discriminatory behavior/statements toward democrats or minorities. Without a history of documented unprofessional behavior, I don't think this is an offense warranting dismissal. If he has a history and it's been buried, the Sheriff should be held accountable as well as the officer. It would have been better, imo, for him to be encouraged to retire rather than risk damage to the credibility of the entire department or try to re-establish his credibility with the citizens assuming he had any.
