Republican lawmakers in Ohio have introduced a bill that seeks to ban almost all abortions in the state and criminalize the procedure. State Representatives Levi Dean and Johnathan Newman introduced the Ohio Prenatal Equal Protection Act on Wednesday. The bill would grant legal protections from the moment of fertilization, meaning abortion would be treated as homicide, in a challenge to an abortion rights amendment to the State Constitution that voters approved in 2023. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, anti-abortion activists have been pushing measures to enshrine the rights of fetuses in a bid to end abortion nationwide. Ohio voters enshrined abortion protections in 2023, prompting judges to strike down abortion bans in the state. Abortion is legal up to 20 weeks from fertilization in Ohio. While Republicans in Ohio have historically passed abortion restrictions and bans, legislation in the past has been aimed at penalizing abortion providers rather than the people who have them. But the new bill, if enacted, would change that. It could also affect in vitro fertilization (IVF) and some forms of contraception.

Despite Ohio voters enshrining abortion protections in a state Constitutional Amendment, Republicans have now intrioduced legislation to criminalize abortion.... arrest and prosecute women who elect to have an abortion in Ohio.

They will be charged with homicide, treating an inseminated embryo as personhood with rights superseding the rights of a woman.

For the life of me, I can never understand the hold Republicans have over Ohio voters.

I often hear commercials trying to attract STEM professionals to move to Ohio. I agree that it's a beautiful state with plenty to do. However, it's probably not going to attract the people it seems to want if it continues to cater to the far right. I'm not throwing stones; just pointing that out.

I don't understand how they can if it's protected in their Constitution.

There is a major disconnect among the Ohio electorate. They support abortion rights and the Republican Party.

So let me get this straight. You are worried about treating a baby in the womb as a person with rights and protections, but you are fine with encouraging illegal immigrants, some who are criminals, to come to this country in violation of our laws and then work to protect them with our laws that they are in violation of!

This is criminal activity on the part of Ohio republicans that needs to land every last one of them in a cell for 10 years.

Attempting to hijack threads is lame.

So, abortion is homicide, and abortion is a states-rights issue. That how it is?
Oh no, rightists would never press for a national ban. Nope-nope-nope.

So let me get this straight. You think abortion is homicide, and you think it's a states-rights issue.

How is it criminal? The decision on abortion was placed in the hands of the states and that's what this is. Like it or not is for each to decide, and voting on the issue gives the people the power of making that decision. Show me where it's illegal.

The people have spoken. GQP scum has no right to go around the will of the people.

Attempting to do so is an attempt to subvert the power of the people and is criminal in nature.

It's a form of treason.

The Ohio state Constitution allows for abortion. Passing laws prohibiting abortion violates the Constitution. I can see any such law, if passed, will be challenged in state court. But this is nothing but a Republican power trip.

To be fair, the people voted to amend the state constitution to allow for abortion. Its the politicians who are the problem, as usual.
Yep.

Usually is the government, not the actual residents.

It is indeed a podunk, he-haw, hillbilly infested hell hole.
Not all of us are hillbillies. Just the southern half.

The politicians are also trying to repeal the marijuana legalization that we voted on. The corruption in Ohio's government has reached new levels.

I'm moving out in the next year if I can. I hate this place,. mostly for the conservatives who have turned this place into a hell hole. Republicans are a pest species.

Bro can we just have one ****ing day without right wingers trying to destroy people's rights or set the world on ****ing fire
Still waiting for that day. And what a glorious day it will be 😆

Id much rather have immigrants than republicans. Republicans are the problem. Abort the republican fetus'

Treating a ****ing embryo as a person is absolutely insane.
