As a South African I took it upon myself to create this thread and use it for discussion of the World Cup until it ends later this year.

Who do you think will win? It'll be an interesting world cup, I'm surprised they let us have the world cup in the end, I'm just waitin for the headlines "Italian family of 4 slaughtered in hotel room" but besides that ;) it's gonna be a great world cup.

Go Bafana Bafana.

So are all the pitches finally match ready? I'd heard that at least one has needed to be re-sodded several times.

As for my loyalties, please see my sig.

I know flip about soccer. Is USA favored in their block or bracket or whatever since androgynous fagboi Beckham broke himself?

The U.S. is actually favored to go onto the next round, because the only real competition they are suppose to have is Britain.

I love the World Cup and look forward in seeing the American actually do well this year. I have high hopes for them.

It is England not Britain lol,.. congrats on pissing a 30+ million off :)

And yes the US team has a good chance of progressing to the next round since they are in an "easy" preliminary round group.

As for Beckham, yes he is seriously injured but most likely will be there as an England team coach at large or something similar.

Favorites are Spain followed by Brazil and Germany. Dark horses are Argentina (if they can start playing like a team), England, Netherlands, Ivory Coast and defending champions, Italy.

If Spain's main players can stay fit, then they will be the team to beat.

Opps my bad. Writing a paper about election cycles in Great Britain tends to make me type Great Britain even when I mean England. Thanks for pointing out my error.

South Africa got so screwed its unreal. Uruguay, Mexico and France!?! It's going to be embarrassing. South Africa is going to lose every game on our home soil.

Dont be too sure about that. France are not as strong as they once where. For some reason France refuse to get rid of their manager who has zero ability to deal with the primadonas of the team. France barely scraped through to South Africa (hand of god over again).

Mexico also have not been playing too well and barely qualified. Considering what qualification zone they are in, then it is pretty hard for a country like Mexico NOT to qualify (like the US). They have also just fired their coach.

Uruguay is a dark horse, but like all Uruguayan teams, if they get behind away from home they tend to fall apart. Uruguay were a dark horse in the 1986 Mexico finals and were hammered by Denmark and went out big time.

While South Africa have not had the best of times up to these games, they do have the home advantage and that in football is huge.

European teams don't usually do too well abroad (they have never won a world cup which was not hosted on European soil). Thus I predict a South American country to be the winner, most certainly Argentina or Brazil; but I will be happily surprised if an African nation wins (it will be a first)!

This is true, however these "European teams" are Germany and Italy for the most part :). Spain has never been this good :)

Yes. Italy won 4 world cups. Germany won 3 (surprisingly none since the German reunification). The UK and France both won one. All of them on European soil.

Spain is the best in Europe nowadays but I don't see them winning in Africa. However I have been wrong before.

I am ready to bet (just for funsies) that this time Argentina will win. They are used to play under such latitudes and their players are currently the best imo.

Oh and don't you worry about France, our players can't be bothered to play well today, they are currently too busy screwing hookers!

Thanks for the kind words Pete, but I still think we're screwed :(

But I'll have a little hope for them.

Germany won in 1990, a year after defacto reunification :) but yes it was called the West German team at the time. They also reached the final in South Korea, so.. However to be brutally honest, there has not been the same quality of German players as there was during the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s... not even remotely.

Normally I would agree. The traditional statistics say that it is a non European team that is going to win, but as it stands now, Spain is far far better than Argentina and better than Brazil, the only two realistic non European teams that will be able to win the cup. The really far far outsiders are Ghana and Ivory Coast, who could in theory go all the way, but they lack finals experience.. even more than Spain heh... Yes Spain's only problem is lack of experience on the big stage.

They just cant play together

It is purely analytical. On paper yes France and Mexico and Uruguay are huge opponents, but of the 3, Uruguay are probably the strongest team at the moment.

And lets not forget... Rugby World cup :)

I like Germany above all other European teams, but I really hope Spain does better this time around. They've been hugely disappointing of late, especially considering the talent pool they've got.

This is the only thing to like about soccer, in my eyes. I also love Rammstein.

Eh? Spain lost 1 game the last 4+ years lol and that was against the US. They are by far the strongest team in the world atm. They are European Champions after all. Now I would agree prior to this team coming up, the Spanish have been the worst under achievers in football history but that in many ways went away (hopefully) with the Spanish Euro win 2 years ago. They tied the Brazilian record of 35 games unbeaten before loosing to the US.

As for Germany.. you can never ever ever count them out.. they are a tournament team and have a buttload of luck always. They can play like crap and still win the world cup.. look at 1990.

You're right, I had forgotten about Euro '08. I was thinking of the WC '06 squad. :3oops:

Most definitely. They seem to do well even with mediocre talent.

 Is that true?
Anyways, I cannot see Argentina winning because Maradona is the coach and he is really lousy. All the teams they play against will be guarding Messi to make sure he can't do anything. So they won't win.
South Africa might win because the World Cup might be fixed for them to win. Remember when France playeg against Brazil in the World Cup and it was being hosted in Paris? 1996, 2000, or something around that time. Basically I was in Mexico when they were going to play and I was watching a "psychic" and he predicted that France was going to win 3-0, and this was before the Cup had actually started like an hour before the kickoff. And what happened? France won 3-0!
