CLEVELAND (AP) -- A U.S. immigration court has granted asylum to President Obama's African aunt, allowing her to stay in the country, her attorneys announced Monday.
The decision was mailed Friday and comes three months after Kenya native Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Mr. Obama's late father, testified at a closed hearing in Boston, where she arrived in a wheelchair and two doctors testified in support of her case.
The basis for her asylum request hadn't been made public. People who seek asylum must show that they face persecution in their homeland on the basis of religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a social group.
Her attorney, Margaret Wong of Cleveland, said last year that Ms. Onyango first applied for asylum "due to violence in Kenya." The East African nation is fractured by cycles of electoral violence every five years.

I have to say, this all sounds very fishy... but not entirely unexpected.
Can anyone here imagine the hue and cry if this was done with one of Bush's relatives while he was in the White House? Where is the outrage from the left?

Oh give the "What If's" a rest Rocky Dennis
If the president is at all involved, I'll have some :soap all the live long day, just for you.
Until we know what's up, I'm holding off. I still think it's fishy, but as during his campaign, I doubt he'd risk his hands on this. But I'm sure you'll find a way to prove me otherwise
It's fishy but anyone looking into it will simply be told it's off limits and it'll be locked away with the rest of Obama's history. Just sayin... The paper work went through amazingly fast and there were no questions....
No details have been released, how do you know that?

From the article...... did you read it?
So in complete lack of any sort of evidence you're just assuming there's something shady going on because it's a president on the "other team."
Got it.
So we have no details given as to why she was granted asylum, except that she is from Kenya where violence is periodic. We have no details as to whether this type request being granted is normal or not. We have no details of any wrongdoing, not even an accusation of such, except that she happens to be related to Obama. Basically, you are right, there is not a thing to see here.

Maybe the President could release it and show all us critics what for, eh? I'm just not going to hold my breath...

You're right. There's nothing to see here. I would expect the President's aunt to be allowed to stay in the country he governs. She's not a dangerous criminal. She's the president's aunt. I see no reason why she shouldn't be granted asylum.

Two possible options:Asylum from what?

Actually, I can make an educated guess as to why she was granted asylum. Islamic fundies in Kenya hate the US, and if Obama's aunt was forced to live there, I bet she would be the number one target for them, because of being related to the head of state of the country they hate the most.
In that context, I understand why she was given asylum. It would be a very legitimate reason. But let's not let that stand in the way of our political witch hunting.
