I blame our intelligence community. We spend billions of dollars to get a heads up on this type action. What happened?
You didn't ask the NSA.
You didn't ask the NSA.
I personally suspect there are a good many people in positions of power who do not want us to have an edge, in the arena of geopolitical power, but would rather us just be essentially impotent at wielding any influence whatsoever. We are gradually reducing ourselves to irrelevancy in any significant manner.
Since you're laughing at the NSA, canell, do you think any info from Snowden may be helping Putin right now ?

I get that this is a popular meme for many hysterical rightie tighties, and I'm not even a tiny bit patriotic, but seriously who do you think is more relevant than the USA? Seriously, let's hear 'em. Another country is the global financial currency? Good, bad, or indifferent, which other country is first and most in the news globally looking for our reaction to most global issues, which country is first on the list when "freedom fighters" want financial and logistic support, which country is first on the list when a country needs humanitarian aid after a disaster???
This idea that we are reducing ourselves hopefully is true, because we could be reduced 10fold or more and still be more relevant than any other country. Stop with the trying to put shame on it. The real shame is the fact that our military spending is more than the next 13 countries combined. Then because we don't, what?, start a war over Crimea, some whiny citizens bemoan our weakness.

Obama threatens to
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the time for warnings is over. The article says they are considering what steps to take. Why don't they already KNOW what steps to take? Why are no contingency plans for this in place already? If our intelligence didn't see this coming? Why not?

I have stated before I believe many in the USA, China, Russia and around the world want another arms race, plus to continue to divide up the resources and wealth of the world because us "super powers." Arms races are extremely profitable and countries and regions can be occupied by the diversion that it is to block another major power - thus us dividing up the world.
thus us dividing up the world.

No I didn't but you're apparently unable to comprehend the difference between being reduced to irrelevancy and being able to reduce 10fold yet still being more relevant than any other country. You just proved Lizzie's point. Great job!

I believe you're right on target. We have a president that hates America, opposes American exceptionalism and believes that all the bad things that have happened in the past 100+/- years are the fault of The United States.
The Western powers have to at least place sanctions on Russia if they are not going to help Ukraine. We cannot let Russia invade whoever they want.
The Russians and the Chinese never stopped wanting to rule the world. They would have pulled it off, if not for The United States.
Two things, again remembering that I'm not at all a patriot. The same IC that got it wrong in Iraq, the same IC that gets everything wrong. In my business, I fire people like that.
In a global poll, the US is seen as the biggest threat to world peace, so this may be seen as a good development.
