Of course you do, but in this case you have no real experience. You can't know or understand some of the variables that come into play.
As I said this does not invalidate your opinion, but you have less information than someone who has served on this particular subject.
They know full well when they join the military about "don't ask don't tell" so who is the stupid one?
The military frowns on relations between officers and enlisted as well. They do what most others do and go on leave.
It is not that hard.
I am totally against this. As a veteran I believe this will cause problems. Soldiers live in close quarters. Men and women may live in the same barracks but they have seperate rooms, rest rooms, and showers. Bare in mind that the showers are not private and many men will be showering at the same time. Just as men and women shower seperatly will men and gays be showering seperatly. If I know a soldier is gay Im not getting naked in front of him. And what about rooms. Typically there will be anywhere from 2 to 4 men or more shareing a room. The same with women. I don't want a gay man as a roommate checking me out when Im dressing. Or when Im laying around in my underwhere watching TV or what ever. I do not think open gays can serve with straight soldiers unless accomidations are made such as seperate rooms and restrooms and showers for gays just like there are seperate facilities for men and women.

What is there to understand. I've worked with gay people. I know gay people. I trust gay people. I've showered with gay people. I can't imagine anything changing because our lives were on the line.
Does having your life on the line make you think about the one of the team cornholing you?
Please tell me how this it's different. You've got the experience. What do you know about gays that I don't?
Once again, if you're worried about a dude oggling your weiner while you're in the middle of a war zone, your priorities are out of whack. And either way, you'll do what your superiors tell you to do or you'll be dishonorably discharged.
Gays already serve in the military. I just fail to see how it's going to cause such a huge problem if suddenly people know who they are. I'm sure many know already. I'm sure some people will have a problem with it, but they'll have to get over it. Times change. Gay people exist. Deal with it.
Men and women in the military have seperate open showers. Should we allow men and women to shower together? And if not then why shoud we have straight and openly gay men showering together?
It has hurt enlistments enough without adding more at this time.
Blackdog said:Who is pretending that they don't? I never said or implied this. I don't want to know who is or is not, period. It would be an unwelcome distraction no matter how much you would like to candy coat it.
Blackdog said:80% of this country is Christian, so odds are the military breakdown is about the same.
Blackdog said:So you are talking about a minority of military personal to begin with. We are so concerned about protecting the sensibility's of the minority. Who is protecting the sensibility's of the majority?
Blackdog said:It would affect moral as many people in the military would be very uncomfortable to say the least. I can honestly say as much as I agree gay people should be allowed to serve, I probably would have balked at joining. I am certain a whole lot of troops would feel exactly the same way.
It's not that simple.
But you acknowledged that gays already serve in the military. Why would you balk at joining if the government didn't pretend that there are no gays in the military?
What if your not in the middle of a war zone and your living in the barracks back in the states? Like I said women and men have seperate rooms showers and rest rooms. Why wouldn't straight and openly gay men not have seperate facilities?
As one who cares little about homosexuality in general, as people are people in my book.
One would have to ask, is it wise to implement social change in the middle of two wars?
Why do this now, and not wait until peace time? will it affect moral? less than most think, more than others. But the fact that troops are dying, do we want to mess with a social status quo at this moment?
There is no "social change". I served openly gay for 4 years and was not the only one in my squad. No one cared, and the mission was never compromised because of it. The status quo is the same with or without "Don't ask, don't tell."
The last thing on my mind during any serious military action is sex. If anyone is thinking about what the guy next to him is thinking about sexually while being shot at, then it is that person who cannot focus on the mission and that person does not belong in the military.
If Obama does this, it is +1 with me on his achievements.

I thought everyone in the Air Force was gay?

Did you read and understand my full points and all my posts?
That's the Navy.
funny when Army guy makes inter-service jokes.
Not funny when you do it. :2wave:
lol... not only that but I was in the medical field. That seems to be a big draw for gays.

Now I am wondering of I did. Explain more.
