From here:
Obama said the proposal would be fully paid for. In an earlier briefing for reporters, administration officials said Obama would pay for the program by asking lawmakers to close tax breaks for oil and gas companies and multinational corporations.
I thought he hadn't spent much of the stimulus yet? Is it all gone? Why can't the $50 billion come from there?
Show me where I said that.....you can't....What's this? Give us your money or we'll kill you?
How America has changed!
I thought conservatives were against subsidies? Gas prices are artificially low in the USA....but I think that will change soon.Obama is pretty much a moron if he thinks that will do anything other than increase costs on the people he claims to care about. Who do you think is going to pay for those tax breaks closing? Shell or BP? or middle class working people who buy gasoline?

I wonder if the revenue collected has been diverted? It wouldn't be the first time a tax was collected for one purpose and used for another...actually I am more against tax policies that make american businesses less competitive
gas prices are artificially high in many countries due to large amounts of taxes

The Japanese must be miracle fairy workers who magically assembled quite the export machine in the face of even greater tax policies
I guess you never learned that the main purpose of Japanese government is to support and nurture their businesses. How many plaintiff's lawyers are there per capita in Japan? But your silly retort is not relevant to my post
So hold up here a second, Japan is not an example of laissez faire capitalism?
why are you trying to derail this thread? I am against tax policies in the USA that makes AMERICAN companies less competitive. I also oppose Obama's patently idiotic ploy to buy votes by demonizing American Corporations when in reality his schemes will be passed on in costs to american consumers
that was what I was referring to, was I too subtle?start with social security for your answer
but this isn't a waste, creating jobs isn't wasteful. Not to mention to make improvements to public property. I see nothing wrong with it.
Just looking for a little consistency. Sheesh.
It's time to put America back to work building America again.
“[The plan would] put construction workers, welders, electricians back to work ... folks that have been unemployed for a long time.” — Labor Secretary Hilda Solis
that was what I was referring to, was I too subtle?
The wife and I both started drawing at 62, hoping to get as much of it as we can before the benefits drop, or dry up.
YOU are well employed and still paying in, right? If so, thanks for your contribution....:2razz:
I'm disappointed with the low quality of posts in this thread. This is an important subject, and merits more than "those Democrats are skanks. I'm votin' for Sarah Palin!"
America is heading into a depression which will be complicated by environmental tragedies. A major stimulus is needed NOT to help the economy grow (which it will never do, and shouldn't be allowed to do), but TO KEEP AMERICANS FED AND HOUSED.
This will require the largest transfer of wealth in American history, from private hands to public works projects. And rather than building highways and airports, it has to be all about downsizing America's resource needs. This can be done by investing in rail, water transport, high density low-rise housing in tight urban areas, the return of small family farms.... etc.
It will cost the rich their current lives of boundless consumption. But without this kind of change, America - and perhaps the world - is finished.
Reducing an issue of this kind of seriousness to partisan soundbites about your favorite political football team (red or blue) demonstrates the need to invest in education as well.
Mind you, I'm aware that cuts to education have been part of the way the rich have taken from the poor as well.
The reason Trotsky had such a large following is because the world had a disproportionate ratio of the filthy rich few to impoverished millions, and not much of a middle class.
If the rich want to return to that, they should first read up on the French Revolution.
The opposition party is there just to oppose, regardless of what it was.
Well it's usually from those who don't really know what socialism entailed. We saw it during the healthcare "debate" as well. That's something I'm very skeptical of because I don't think government could actually make a system which wasn't just a gift to corporate America and less to do with helping out the common folk. But there's nothing wrong with asking the question; is this something we could legitimately use government for? Can it produce the desired results? These are valid questions, and the base answer to them is yes. Medical care has aggregated to extreme levels of technology and along with it costs. But there's nothing saying that we can't make a base system which ensures some amount of medical access to everyone. Probably nothing for the big things, surgery and limb replacement, etc. You can still have private insurance for that. But something like a doctor's visit, setting a bone, vaccination, etc. There's no reason you couldn't build a system to handle that. Instead of people putting off going to the doctor till it's too late; you'll encourage people to go early on.
Could it be wasteful? Well on some level because not ever cough we get turns into something serious. But sometimes the coughs we get DO turn into something serious and by having a base level of guaranteed health insurance for all; you'll go a long way into addressing these issues. Which further lowers costs to insurance companies by spotting major aliments early on when treatment is easier and cheaper. But we never even got that discussion. It was socialism this and death panels that. This abandonment of intellectual discourse and discussion has seeped into just about everything; even this public works discussion. There is immediate, knee jerk reactions which prevent intelligent discussion on the matter; and that goes a lot further into harming us and the future of the Republic than some temporary public works program could ever do.
