Obama says democracy ‘may not survive’ if Arizona Republicans win

PHOENIX — Former president Barack Obama used a rally here on Wednesday night to deliver perhaps his bluntest warning yet about the stakes of next week’s midterm elections for America’s system of self-government.

If the Republican candidates here are successful, Obama argued, “Democracy as we know it may not survive in Arizona.”

“That’s not an exaggeration,” he added. “That is a fact.”

Because victory for the GOP ticket, the former president proclaimed to a crowd of more than 1,000 in a high school gymnasium in southern Phoenix, would mean “election deniers serving as your governor, as your senator, as your secretary of state, as your attorney general.”

Democracy will not survive in Arizona? LOL!! That has to be the dumbest Obama soundbite I've ever heard.

Huh? That’s a complete non-sequitur to me.

I would define “democracy” (representative democracy anyway) as “the people vote for the people they want to lead them.” So, if the people want to vote for people that
“will not accept election results” like, say, Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrams, I don’t find that inconsistent with Democracy at all. “The most basic requirement of Democracy” is people vote for their leaders. It’s really the only requirement.
In 2020 the majority of Americans chose Biden. Elected Biden.

Trump and the Trump Republicans tried to end American democracy by not accepting the choice of the American people.

For the first time in our history we didn't have a peaceful transfer of power.

Yes democracy is about the people choosing their representatives.......in order for it to work though, the losers must accept the results.

The Repuicans are no longer willing to do that.

They are anti American democracy.

Obama was right.

It's a fair point you're making, but the people of America still have the opportunity to vote. If America doesn't like the politicians who are the beneficiaries of those things, they can vote them out.
Unless they are voting against the Democrat who is running, because a vote against Democrats is a vote against democracy.

If democracy doesn't survive, what does the country look like, specifically?

President Obama once again is able to use his wise words to hew close to the bone, like a fine surgeon.

Well said Mister President!! The nation would gladly have you back for another 4 years were you to run again!! WELL DONE!!!!!

Obama vs Trump 2024. That would be interesting.

OK, so again this seems hysterical and delusional to me. The transfer of power in 2020 was not particularly challenging. A bunch of unarmed people in horn hats went to the Capitol. Probably not materially more than rioted on Inauguration day 2016. At least not enough to “threaten our Democracy”. And you have not established voting for “election deniers” would somehow put an end to the transfer of power after an election. How exactly would it? It seems like a total nonsense argument to me.

Walk me through the logic step by step:

1) I go to the polls and vote for an election denier like Stacey Abrams
2) ???
3) ???
.
.
.
999) NO MORE DEMOCRACY!!!!

Again, the argument is missing a lot of steps as far as I can tell.

You might want to read a little history. The US had never seen anything like Trump's attempt to cling to power.

So if the Republicans win big Tuesday, we might be a kingdom? Autocracy? China?
Uh... no idea what you are talking about. You think the country is going to magically change, overnight?

Yeah, I still don't get it. You think that Obama thinks that the country is going to magically transform overnight into an autocracy?

No, I'm pretty sure Obama is not insane or even a dumbass.

So maybe you're having a bit of trouble understanding his meaning?

Do you think democracy might not survive if Republicans win?

If only we had to worry about the Banana Republic of Arizona...

If only.

MAGA has metastasized into a national cancer, and I suppose, far-right ideology is now a transnational threat to global democracy. The far-right - not just here but elsewhere - is just waiting for a crisis to exploit. There will be a buffet of crises to choose from in the coming years so it looks like it's just a matter of waiting and then capitalizing on people's emotions once the time is right.

OK then.
Do you think democracy might not survive if Republicans win?
Yes. Democracy is built on trust in the election process. If Republicans refuse to accept the vote tallies or can overturn them somehow, then Republicans will begin to "win" every election. That would be the end of democracy... yes?

Which is why I think we should go with Trump's theory of election control. Kamala should reject all unhappy totals in January of 2025 and fix things so that only Democrats can win the Presidency from now on.

Would you consider that to be the non-survival of democracy?

Just one of the multitudes of 'Democracy under threat' fear mongering from Democrats.
Must be a day who's name ends in a 'y'.

Maybe Barack would feel proud to be an American for the first time if it nominated his wife to be president
Obama has always been proud of America. Didn't you notice how he governed?

He's no Trump -- shouting MAGA! while trying to corrupt our institutions and invade our Capitol.

Yep. Republicans winning fair and square isn't the end of democracy, though.
