Obama Gives Yet Another Speech

I don't get the Republicans some times. Why can't they just take 98% of what they want and declare victory?

I dont get Democrats sometimes. Why cant they just take 98% of what they want and declare victory?

Remember the Pubs summer Presidential debates. Every Presidential candidate said no to a 10-1 ratio of spending cuts/revenue increase. Now the pubs will be lucky to get a 1-1 ratio. If you immediately go nuclear and don't kill your target. Don't expect good results.

10-1 was never a serious proposition. Democrats have never offered even 1 to 1. Obamas last joke was 1 dollar in future spending growth cuts to 2 dollars in immediate tax increases.

That would be bad for the country, and thus bad for Republicans.

What would be bad for the country and bad for the Republicans?

I talked about two different things in the post you responded to.

Elections have consequences.

Making a deal which defacto approves higher taxes on anyone and really does nothing fiscally sane.

Okay.

Well, I don't really care if it's bad for the Republicans...even though I support their direction more than the Democrats.

I wish. All we got was status quo.
thanks to Republican gerrymandering of congressional districts.

But, I like divided government. Before the word compromise became a dirty word, it seemed to work well.

Im fine with it too. I like it when congress doesnt get anything done. That means less new laws and spending.

Thats not my viewpoint. I understand you don't like government. But, only government can do certain things. Government can bring us together or tear us apart.

But, like the fiscal cliff and the debt ceiling. There is a disconcerting pattern. Let's just default on our debts. Lets kill our credit rating despite that meaning billions in more interest.

Just blow the damn thing up. Thats what anarchist's believe.

Going over the fiscal cliff or not raising the debt ceiling will not result in us defaulting on our debt unless Congress elected to default on our debt. Debt service is less than federal annual revenue. It would just require more cuts be made or money printed if the debt ceiling is not raised.

I can shoot someone in the leg. He will be okay, just need to go to the hospital. Just because I didn't kill the guy and he will eventually recover doesn't mean that I should have shot him in the first place.

We can't cut our way out of this mess. Thats not the magic cure. Just a piece of the puzzle.

I never said cutting our way out of it is the best solution or a "magic cure". I was just pointing out that is a possibility that not raising the debt ceiling does not automatically result in default on our debt. The fiscal cliff raises revenues and cuts spending, so that alone takes some pressure off the debt ceiling for a nano-second or two.

Nor can we continue to tax and spend...or worse, increase taxes and spending.

The biggest problem, as I see it, is that many in government...but especially the Democrats...talk about the need to cut spending and raise taxes. They agree with you that cutting spending is just a piece of the puzzle. Unfortunately, after the talking is done...when the doing needs to be done, they increase taxes and then, somehow, lose that other puzzle piece - the spending cuts. And then...to make matters worse...instead of continuing to look for that piece, they just say, "Oh, well." and go back to increasing spending.

It's about time to change focus. It's about time to find that missing piece of the puzzle and actually put it into its proper place. Make it a part of the picture. Then, we can go back to the other pieces.

Thats what revolutionaries beleive, and thats what we need. When govt becomes destructive, its time to change it. And I dont dislike govt. I dislike THIS govt.

We can easily cut our way out of this mess. Spending is historically 18-20% of GDP. Its currently 25% of GDP. Simply forcing the govt to only spend 2.5 trillion, instead of 3.5 trillion would be a magic cure. There is nothing that we added in the last 5 years that we cant do without.
