I have always bought the accidental lab leak theory as a possibility. For two reasons: 1) I do not believe that the Chinese government would willingly spread a virus. The CCP is deathly afraid of losing power, and if word ever got out that they did this on purpose -- especially as regards to the zero-COVID policy -- there would be hell for them to pay. In the CCP's minds, that would mean to confront the very real possibility that they could lose power. And before you say "Great Firewall," there are ways around it (or were then, anyway). And I don't think we would ever be able to verify that it was done intentionally to begin with.
2) Compared to other nations that have stronger scientific communities (US, Sweden, Germany, France, etc.), safety and regulations are lax. It is entirely possible that poorer safety protocols led to the leak. China is more stringent on government secrets than they are on lab research.
