NYS CC recertification deadline

Deadline was 8/31/23 to re-certify if it was issued before 9/2020 and you haven't recently done it (glad I was due and re-certified recently). Wasn't even aware of this new requirement. Now have to re-certify every 3 years instead of every 5. Don't get the purpose of this crap except to make it harder on legal owners. Example of feel-good law that does nothing.

Sounds great!!

(for starters)

Gee, I thought all gun owners were law abiding and responsible. Re-certifying every 3 years shouldn't be considered as an inconvenience for gun owners.

Recertification of what, exactly?

Just because it's an inconvenience, doesn't mean we won't do it. I can still complain of the ridiculousness of it.

Heck MD is two years. Now get this.

MD requires fingerprints on initial and every renewal. MD will issue a Handgun Permit (concelaed carry) to a non-resident but the only fingerprint places that MD accepts are in the state of MD. Non-MD law enforcement is not good enough. So, I have to do a special trip to MD every two years to renew my HGP.

Why do you need an MD permit ?

Why do you need an MD permit ?
None of your business but I will humor you. MD does not recognize permits from other states. I have property in MD and travel there. With a MD permit, I do not have to disarm when I hit the Potomac River.

So you can't even open carry in MD, without a permit ?

I think Georgia requires a carry license to carry a hand gun (open or concealed).

Blue state. Very difficult to get a permit but easier after Bruen (removal of subjective good cause). In MD, with a permit, you can carry open or concealed.

Nope, not since April 2022. Open and concealed carry is legal without a permit in GA as long as you are not a 'prohibited" person.

I guess that was one of the things that changed

Like carrying a gun in (parts of) an airport and in bars (unless specifically forbidden by the owner/s).

Suffolk County is even 5 years and the cost is $25 (or something nominal like that). Beats the hell out of NYC where it used 3 years and $350 (in 1980s dollars).

What is a pain in the ass is that you have to go to Police HQ - in Yaphank - in person to get a purchase authorization. So the process is you find the firearm you want to buy, get paperwork from the shop then

drive to Yaphank, get the authorization,
drive back to the shop, purchase the firearm,
drive back to Yaphank to the weapon "inspected" - meaning the serial number of what you bought matches the authorization and get the firearm added to your license.

All in 48 hours, iirc. For me Yaphank is a 50 mile drive so that's 200 miles of driving. They recently did away with the inspection part halving the driving but it's still a pain in the ass.

Regular pistol permits are staying the same, 5 years. The CC is now 3 years. Why the heck don't they have an office closer than Yaphank. Nothing in Hauppauge?

I wish. I'm 15 minutes from Hauppauge. It's only done in Yaphank which is where the pistol license division is located. My guess is it's a manpower issue, they don't want to detail extra cops - actual cops do the paperwork not civilians - to the job and if it makes life a little tougher on the populace well who cares.

There's no real reason to do it in person at all. The entire thing could easily be handled via online forms and uploading scans of the required documentation. Or even the US mail if you want to remain in the 20th century instead of the modern world.

Boy I bet that puts a crimp in your life. Every three years, it's just so...inconvenient.

I guess using an ID for voting is OK then. It isn't an inconvenience for minorities to obtain an ID.
