A police official told The Associated Press that the attorney for Bartha's wife contacted police recently and said that she had received an e-mail from the doctor in which he indicated he was contemplating suicide.

Bartha was going through a difficult divorce and was being forced to sell the building, and authorities believe the explosion may be related to a suicide attempt, the police official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Looks like a nutcase who needed some therapy.

Looks like a very limited incident, with very few, if any, casualties.
But that's a pretty low way to go out. You live in NYC, seen what terrorism has done at its worst, and decide that when you have to sell your BMW because of a divorce you need to blow up a building.

A surprising number of people who attempt suicide with gas inadvertently blow up the building. It's amazing, to me, how many survive. This guy thought he had problems before but I suspect he is now facing 1st degree arson, multiple attempted murder or reckless endangerment charges, and possibly even attempted suicide.
