Notre Dame withdraws from hosting first presidential debate due to coronavirus

I doubt that Biden even wants a face to face debate. At least one where he's not fed the questions in order to get prepared.

Why would he debate Trump? Trump speaking is Joes best campaign ad.

During presidential election campaigns in the United States, it has become customary for the main candidates (almost always the candidates of the two largest parties, currently the Democratic Party and the Republican Party) to engage in a debate. The topics discussed in the debate are often the most controversial issues of the time, and arguably elections have been nearly decided by these debates.

There is your answer why Biden will not debate, but will voters not vote for Biden because he is a chicken.

My gut feeling is that Biden won't go there. I think he'll provide a stark contrast to Trump's bombastic nature. And I think it will sell well.

That's been the strategy thus far, and since the target audience isn't the one whose mind needs to be changed, I suspect Biden will stick to the game plan. Letting Trump go on with his name calling and over use of hyperbole while Biden sticks to issues and keeps his cool should be enough to snag the independents and moderate Republicans who have had enough. If the polls are accurate, the shift is already happening; unless Trump pulls a miracle, I don't think that trajectory is changing.

It seems to me Biden is letting Trump campaign for him, and it seems to be effective.

It's dangerous though, as we've seen HRC have those periods - and we saw the results.

Maybe. Then, why cancel them?

I would be willing to bet the house on this. Notre Dame went belly up to appease the student body. Once again the inmates are running the jail. Don't know the format, but if there is no audience (not needed) what is the virus concern anyway?

I hope they have one, more are not needed. No audience only the candidates and the folks asking questions.

I dont imagine there are many folks who are still undecided.

There would be camera and sound staff, lighting, catering, staff for the president, including SS, staff for Biden, general security. So I would guess 200 people would be required to a debt that was televised. Now you will also have protests outside the debate, and given the current climate it could easily turn violent. I doubt “free speech “ zones will work this year in keeping protestors in a certain area

I have a problem with these venues dropping the debates just because its not financially worth it to them. These debates are very important and they should honor their commitment to hosting them.

That is communism

Why should they hold events which will cost them money they don’t want to spend

Well, so much for the free market, eh?

Yeah, they're letting Trump shoot himself in the foot. It doesn't make sense to interrupt that, but recently the Biden campaign has put forward talking points about what he would do as president; he can't just sit back and not have anything for people to vote for other than disliking Trump. What's going to be tough for Trump is the handling of the pandemic, because it will be on everyone's mind for a variety of reasons. The talking point of how great the economy was won't mean much if he is helpless to change what it currently is . I suspect the recovery will be a slow one given the unfortunate extension by the states which are surging now.

Biden has an ace up his sleeve, that Hillary didn't. He is much less disliked than her. I believe that will enter the electoral calculus.

There's a risk there too in that he's part of the old guard that many progressives are railing against. I'm not a Biden advocate, but these are unusual times. What the Biden campaign will need to avoid is not making the same mistakes the Hillary camp made by not campaigning in states they thought they either had in the bag or felt weren't worth it.

Biden is in his basement facepalming over the AG Barr hearing today. Everyone should have ceded their time to Rep. Swalwell, imo.

Because they enterted into an agreement. Its not communism to honor an agreement you made.

I was so happy when University of Michigan withdrew hosting the second debate in Ann Arbor.

At this time Our state Michigan has to do everything we can to our numbers of Covid 19 cases as low as possible.

Would that not be because they can then sell tickets and ad revenue for the broadcast rights? Much like places bid to host the Olympics, spending a lot in hopes of making it back in other revenue?

I for one would be very interested in seeing Biden and Trump face off unscripted at least twice.

Any good contract has an out clause for items beyond the control of the parties involved

A pandemic with social distancing orders, would provide such an out

Hillary was Blue, Trump is red, Biden is, ummm, sorta more like Biege.

I have no idea.

Been busy - didn't see it.

You're opinion of the day's events?

anyone who is undecided at this point needs to be bopped on the head with a rice filled sock while the bopper gives them a side eyed annoyed mom face.

face it, folks. enough with the rigmarole. it's time to vote.
