City leaders along with local LGBTQ+ organizations and community members gathered near Griffith Park Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue to take down the last several "No U-Turn" and "No Cruising" signs, which were installed in the '90s when neighbors complained about a gay bar in the area. They were essentially used to prevent people in the gay community from meeting up with other gay people.
I'm at a loss here. How the heck does a "No U-Turn" or "No Cruising" sign prevent gays from doing anything? Were suspected homosexuals chained tot he signs or something?

Wow - so the "history" they speak of - is that the sign was put up not long after a gay bar opened in the area.
The reason they put it up was people kept u-turning and causing problems when the bar was opened.

So... now people will go back to U turning and causing problems. Cause the perpetually outraged feelwings were hurt.

Holy shit

@Lutherf I found out why, my advice for this national tragedy is to treat these signs like confederate statues being torn down.

The guy who called an insurrection aiming to topple the constitutional order and make Trump effectively a post-democratic dictator a "kegger" is freaking out . . .

. . . about a petty dispute about signs in a neighborhood in LA.

I continue to be unable to make it up if I tried. This is what you think matters in a general political discussion in America?

Christ, it's not even what Fox wanted: that you start articles about Biden being a few years older than Trump, thus crossing an invisible line drawn in the place it was drawn specifically so that Trumpists will say Biden is old but Trump is young enough.

You're at a loss here, yet you quoted the very reason right there in your OP:

They were essentially used to prevent people in the gay community from meeting up with other gay people.

The signs were not put up for safety. The signs were not put up due to logistical challenges of making U-turns. The signs were put up to satiate a bigoted neighborhood. So they serve no other purpose and should be taken down. Shouldn't have been put up in the first place.

That is pretty dumb.
How would they stop gay people from meeting gay people???
There is literally a gay bar there!! Where gay people meet gay people.
The gay people would just go in the bar.

They SAID the reason was anti-gay.
I am more inclined to believe it was to stop people from stopping in the middle of the street and u turning all night.

I'm assuming that they chained gays to the signs or something.

How the heck does a "No U-Turn" sign prevent gays from hooking up?
Not sure about where you guys live, but here in the DC metro area there are long boulevards with No U-turn signs at practically every intersection and it's a major PITA if you're going the wrong direction. But in our case it's a legit traffic bandwidth thing.

Is there nowhere you can turn off, turn around in a parking lot or something, and head back the other direction? I mean, seriously, I have NEVER had a "No U-Turn" sign mess my day up so bad that I can't get to the person or place I want to go. Then again, I'm not gay so maybe it's different for gays.

But stereotypes about roving, hypersexual gay men fed into the criminalization of queer spaces, and the city ordinance that restricted drivers from passing through the same area twice within six hours between midnight to 6 a.m. gave law enforcement excuse to profile and harass people they suspected were looking for sexual partners.

It doesn’t take much imagination to envision a time when things like No U-turn signs, no cruising signs, curfew signs, and other restrictions were put up as pretexts for police in gay areas to stop and harass gay people.

Why conservatives get so damn angry over this stuff is beyond me. It just shows how much hate you have that being gay is now largely accepted as normal. Maybe if you stopped followed bigot Twitter accounts you’d realize none of this stuff matters. But if bigots can’t spend hours a day thinking about gayness and wokeness what will they do with their lives?

I didn't say it was impossible, I said it was a PITA (pain in the ass). If we have to deal with that because of legitimate traffic issues, fine, but if they're only up to keep a certain class of people from easily accessing where they want to go, that's just plain wrong.

Well really, if the area became a 'cruise' area where people would slowly cruise up and down hanging out and causing traffic problems, then I can see the sign as justified. It just happened to be gays.

Like back in the 90s near me, the cool thing for the lowrider booming stereo crowd was to cruise a retail area on Friday and Saturday night. Bumper to bumper, cluster ******* the whole area. Not talking a few people, but a shitload of people.
Then the law cracked down, and it came to an end.

But I'm reminded of my BiL and his husband.
If giving directions on where to go, will not say go straight, but say go forward.. For real? :ROFLMAO:

Context! It's very helpful. Thanks.

Police were able to justify stopping vehicles if they broke the law, ie made a U-turn or no "cruising".

The "U" must mean something offensive.

Who knows. It's hard to keep up with what is offensive and what isn't to certain people nowadays.

JUST WATCH THE VIDEO IT IS ALL EXPLAINED. WOW

It's disturbing to think of the devious *unt lengths that people will go to to try and hurt gay people.

I'd never have made the connection between no u-turn signs and a deliberate attempt to hurt someone, but there's always someone out there trying to do something sneaky, devious and absolutely nasty to hurt someone.

Why humans must be like this, I will never understand

The other thing you could do is actually read the link, where you would learn that the signs were not put up for traffic flow or safety reasons but purely to inconvenience people driving to a gay bar, and that is why they are now being removed.

That said, this would take some time and energy. It probably is easier for you to simply become agitated and angry at the leftist filth. No work required on your part, and the muscle memory is already in place.

OK. The traffic rules, presumably, are for everyone, not just gays.
