No Horses, but Detroit Water Department Employs "horseshooer"

Yes this is another thread about the benighted government workers union in Detroit. According to the article the Water Dept. is overweighted with workers. The excuse for having a farrier (horseshoer) is he does things like spot welding and odd maintenance. I think it was just that the positon of the farrier was not removed when they stopped using horses decades ago.

I think a farrier is perfectly understandable.

It sounds like they've kept an outdated title but modernized the responsibilities. If the man is doing legitimate work for the City/County then I really don't have an issue with it. If he's standing around a forge making horseshoes all day then we obviously have a blatant sign of waste.

I don't see the problem, are you really upset about a title? This article has a very strong bias, this quote:

"DWSD has a blacksmith shop in our Central Services Facility," Edwards said. The shop "also ... repairs equipment and works with various metals and welding for the department when needed." The horseshoer now works at the Central Services Facility.

Says that the horseshoer works at the department's shop repairing equipment. If the guy is doing productive work what is your problem?
