(Newsweek) California to Negotiate Trade With Other Countries to Bypass Trump Tariffs (1 Viewer)

TBH California should move forward with this. Congress has the power of the purse and not the President.
Not seeing how the House's 'power of the purse' applies to trade and Newsome wanting to make a trade deal outside of the federal government.

California should claim its independence and make its own constitution. Break free! Fight a revolutionary war if necessary. A neo-leftist paradise awaits CA!

I don't think we'll need a war. We'll just hot box anybody who tries to come at us. They'll be happier, plus they'll forget why they came in the first place.

It just dawned on me that whatever CA does really doesn't matter. At the rate that companies and people are fleeing CA for better run states, Newsom may not soon be in the position to do anything except beg Trump for money to feed the millions of die-hard unemployed neo-leftists that remain.

Newsom is already begging for some billions to rebuild after the fire.
While LA's mayor and other government types have promised to speed up the permitting process to allow the rebuilding to start, I think to date they've only approve 4 permits out of a great many submitted.

Seems like the leftist CA government just simply can't get out of its own way, or not damage itself. Oh well.

These neo-leftists think Trump is their biggest enemy, but he is not. They are their own biggest enemy. They are the source of their anger and hatred, they are the source of all their mental problems, they are the reason no one can stand being near them. Most importantly, they are the reason the entire democratic party has floundered and is now so unpopular. If you really want to ruin a party, invite a neo-leftist. And by party I also mean political party.

Can California indeed make tariff-free bilateral trade agreements with foreign nations/states?

I'm thinking this has to be political posturing, on the part of Governor Newsom.

But it is true the California's economy is the 5th largest in the world. I'm sure other nations would beat a path to California's door, given the opportunity.
How would this not be a violation of the Logan Act?

Agreed. Yet, in typical neo-leftists think, they are victims and its someone else's fault.

When Trump unlawfully and unconstitutionally raised our taxes, he invited this response.

Folks should read the declaration of independence more often:

Strangely enough the Southern states relied heavily on the US Declaration of Independence when they attempted to secede.

That attempted secession was ruled "unconstitutional" by the US Army.

No law just loopholes. The CNMI, as a commonwealth nation, can set its own excise laws on goods. As commonwealth nation it is exempt from all excises on its imports to the U.S.

Made up history. The SCOTUS deemed the secession unconstitutional in Texas v White.

Art I, Section 10, clauses 1 and 2:

No state shall enter into any treaty, alliance, or confederation; grant letters of marque and reprisal; coin money; emit bills of credit; make anything but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts; pass any bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law impairing the obligation of contracts, or grant any title of nobility.

No state shall, without the consent of the Congress, lay any imposts or duties on imports or exports, except what may be absolutely necessary for executing its inspection laws: and the net produce of all duties and imposts, laid by any state on imports or exports, shall be for the use of the treasury of the United States; and all such laws shall be subject to the revision and control of the Congress.

How CA gets around this is anyone's guess, but I doubt they can.
