It is to be expected for the more powerful countries to rattle sabers and posture with their military might. But when small countries like new zealand start preparing for war and natural disasters. That's when you know the shit is getting real.

New Zealand's Defence Force will ramp up its readiness for combat, taking a more "proactive and purposeful" approach as part of a new government strategy. Unveiling the new direction at Parliament, Minister of Defence Andrew Little told guests New Zealand was facing more geostrategic challenges than it had in decades.
The report identified the Chinese government's efforts to increase its "political, economic, and security influence" in the Pacific as a potential risk to regional security.

"The relationship with China is significant for New Zealand, and its cooperation will continue to be essential in addressing many global challenges. At the same time, the Chinese government's assertive pursuit of its strategic objectives is the major driver for the new era of strategic competition among states.

"An increasingly powerful China is using all its instruments of national power in ways that can pose challenges to existing international rules and norms.

A more challenging environment means that the Defence Force will be called upon more often, and personnel must be ready, equipped, and trained for a range of contingencies including armed conflict, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief."

Not really. Most Kiwis are used to isolation as a natural defense.... way out in the middle of nowhere. Building a little defense is not a cause for concern. New Zealand is still primarily search and rescue in non-combat incidents and a nation that will assist larger Allies if conflict actually occurs. ...

Who threatens NZ?

New Zealand is a small country of like 5 million people. The dirty secret is if China became the pacific hegemon New Zealand would just suck up to China and China wouldn’t bother invading NZ. It’s like Switzerland in ww2. American gun rights activists will claim that Switzerland wasn’t invaded because of militias and private gun proliferation, in reality Switzerland wasn’t invaded because they were surrounded by Nazi controlled territory and Germany didn’t need to invade them, it meant nothing to them strategically.

In a hypothetical where China is a hegemon and Australia and the US couldn’t defend NZ for them then NZ would just become a Chinese satrap.

It’s not like the Royal Navy (of Britain, not NZ) is the premier naval power anymore and NZs government for years is trying to destroy all historical traces of British “colonialism” anyway,

And for a long time we have been complacent because of our isolation. Yet we now have an about face and suddenly the government wants to spend more on defense. Trouble is this is an election year so no matter what a politician says they are still just fishing for a vote.

It is not so much as we are being threatened. It is more that those who would go to war in this part of the world will not be to concerned if new zealand gets wiped out because china and america could not play nicely.

What has changed?
I suspect that it is an election year.

The right wing opposition party has announced that they will borrow money from china to finance the infrastructure spend they plan. And the left wing government has announced that it will increase spending and go in a new and more assertive style military program because of china's increasing presence in the pacific.

Gonna be a fun election this year.

That's 5 million people plus 25 million sheep.

You seem to be a bit out of touch. At least as far as a mutual pack between the three now exists.

https://www.cfr.org/in-brief/aukus-explained-how-will-trilateral-pact-shape-indo-pacific-security
Established in 2021, the AUKUS is intended to be a strategic partnership among Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States to bolster their allied deterrence and defense capabilities in the Indo-Pacific..... Pillar I revolves around the acquisition and development of conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy; and Pillar II calls for collaboration on advanced capabilities that will involve technology and information sharing.

China is fighting on a war footing with these three powers as well as on an economic front. While these three powers are only on a war footing and doing nothing about china's financial support to the pacific.

And it is not china owning nz that should be your problem. Having every island between china and america in the pacific in the control of the chinese should be a concern to america.
